How do I use the Unit Planner?

Adapt and customize HMH program units with the Unit Planner

The Unit Planner is an AI-powered tool that helps administrators adapt existing HMH program units to better meet their classroom and district needs. Whether you're modifying pacing, prioritizing certain skills, or planning for diverse learners, this tool provides a flexible and efficient way to create a customized unit plan aligned to your instructional goals.

If you don't see the Unit Planner under AI Tools, double check that you have admin access. If you do and it still doesn’t appear, please contact help@hmhco.ai.


What can the Unit Planner do?

The Unit Planner can:

  • Adapt existing HMH program units or modules to fit your classroom or district priorities

  • Customize pacing by adjusting instructional days, class length, and independent practice time

  • Prioritize key instructional goals based on student needs and classroom context

  • Support differentiated instruction for diverse learners, including students with IEPs and multilingual learners

  • Incorporate teacher-provided context through written input or uploaded files

  • Streamline unit planning while maintaining alignment with core program materials

Perfect for unit customization, pacing adjustments, or instructional planning, this tool helps ensure your lessons are aligned, relevant, and responsive to your students.


Using the Tool

  1. Select an HMH Program from the dropdown menu. Then choose a Module to adapt within that program.

  2. Set your unit structure by selecting:

    • Days in Plan

    • Class Length

    • Independent Practice per Day

  3. In Instructional Priorities, type, paste, or upload details about your classroom context, such as:

    • Student needs (IEPs, language supports, etc.)

    • Instructional goals or focus areas

    • Scheduling or pacing considerations

    💡 Tip! The more specific your instructional priorities—like student needs or district requirements—the more tailored your unit plan will be.

  4. Click Generate to create your customized unit plan.


What's Next?

After generating your unit plan, you’ll receive a customized version of your selected module that reflects your inputs and priorities.

From there:

  • Review and refine the plan to ensure it meets your instructional goals

  • Use HMH Assist to ask questions, make adjustments, or enhance specific parts of the unit

  • Align the plan with your classroom schedule and student needs

  • Export or integrate your plan into your existing planning tools

  • Implement the unit with flexibility and adjust as needed
