What is a lockbox tow?

Lockbox tows are easy, straightforward tow-only jobs. These are for fully operational vehicles typically being transported from an initial location to an easy to access auto-retailer parking lot or service hub where the vehicle keys are available to you from a secure lockbox that is attached to the vehicle's driver-side window.

During pick-up, NO person will be with the vehicle so you’ll need to enter a lockbox code to retrieve the vehicle's keys. The lockbox code is noted in the Special Considerations section for that job from your HONK Partner App. Accessing the keys will allow you to move the vehicle if needed, in order for you to properly load it onto your truck.

How do these jobs work?

Step 1: Select available driver & confirm the required drop off time

Whether you are dispatching yourself or one of your operators, you will need to confirm your company is able to meet the required drop-off time. For lockbox tows adhering to the agreed-upon pickup and drop-off time is essential. While normal jobs normally give you wrap-up time options of 5, 10, 15, or 30 minutes, when you get alerted of a lockbox tow, the wrap-up time & drop-off time options may vary, depending upon location and time of day. Some lockbox tow jobs must be delivered within an hour or two, while others may be delivered by end of the day. You will need to fully read the required drop-off times for each job before accepting each job.

Step 2: Review the job notes as you normally would

These jobs are about as normal as can be with one minor difference. When you get an alert, you’ll want to review the job notes as well as the pickup and drop-off locations. The alert will state that the job is a lockbox tow and in the Special Considerations section you will notice a note stating that the lockbox code will be provided to you after the job has been accepted (see below). Press continue to accept the job.

Step 3: Dispatch the operator that you selected within the app.

It is incredibly important that the operator who was selected in the app, is the one who arrives to pick up the vehicle. This ensures that ETAs are met and that there is no confusion in communications between HONK and the client.

Step 4: Arrive on scene and if needed, move the vehicle using its keys to load it onto your truck

When you arrive, a customer WILL NOT be on scene. If you need to reposition the vehicle to get it onto your truck, you will want to remove the keys from the lockbox using the code that is shown within the job notes. Proceed by driving the car into a position that is best suited to load it onto your truck.

Step 5: Deliver the vehicle within the required drop off time you agreed to

Once the vehicle is loaded you will need to deliver it within the required drop-off time you agreed to when you accepted the job. At the delivery locations, you will notice HONK drop-off signage to indicate where to unload the vehicles. Once delivered, be sure to lock the vehicle, place the keys back in the lockbox using the security code noted in the HONK Partner App for that job.

That's it! You're ready to request payment. It's that easy!

*In some cases when dispatched on more than one active HONK job, you may be required to enter the last 8-digits of the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) for the vehicle you are dropping off. The VIN can be found on the front of the dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle or the driver’s side door pillar.
