Some men experience mild water retention or bloating during fertility treatment. This can happen due to hormonal changes and is generally temporary.

What Causes It

  • Hormonal shifts from treatment can affect how your body regulates fluids.

  • Changes in estrogen and testosterone levels may lead to short-term fluid buildup under the skin.

  • Lifestyle factors—like high salt or carb intake—can increase water retention.

What You Can Do

1. Increase Cardiovascular Exercise

Daily walking, light jogging, or other cardio helps your body sweat out excess water and improves fluid balance.

2. Reduce Sodium Intake

Limit salty snacks, processed foods, and sauces. Aim for whole, unprocessed meals when possible.

3. Cut Back on Excess Carbs

Carbohydrates cause your body to store water. Reducing carb intake—even slightly—can help minimise bloating.

4. Drink More Water

It sounds counterintuitive, but more water helps flush out retained water. Aim for at least 2–3 litres per day unless otherwise advised.

When to Contact a Doctor

  • If bloating is persistent, painful, or rapidly worsening

  • If you notice swelling in your legs, feet, or face

  • If you're unsure whether the bloating is from the medication or another cause

Mild water retention is common and often improves with simple lifestyle changes: more cardio, less salt and carbs, and more water.

If symptoms don’t settle or feel unusual, contact your doctor through the patient portal.
