Priapism is a prolonged, often painful erection that lasts longer than 4 hours and does not go away after orgasm or without continued sexual stimulation. It is rare but serious.

What Is Priapism?

  • Defined as an erection lasting more than 4 hours

  • Not related to ongoing sexual activity

  • May become painful over time

  • Can lead to long-term damage to erectile tissue if not treated promptly

Why It Can Happen

ED medications increase blood flow to the penis. In rare cases, this can lead to poor outflow and a trapped erection. Risk is higher with:

  • Higher doses of medication

  • Use of other drugs affecting blood flow

  • Blood disorders (e.g. sickle cell disease)

  • History of priapism

How to Reduce the Risk

  • Take only the prescribed dose

  • Avoid recreational use or combining with other substances

  • Don’t take another dose before the previous one has worn off

  • Avoid using medications not prescribed to you

What to Do If It Happens

If your erection lasts longer than 2 hours:

  • Try walking, climbing stairs, or doing light exercise

  • Apply a cold compress to the inner thigh or perineum

  • Take a cold shower

If your erection lasts longer than 4 hours:

  • Go to the emergency department immediately

  • Do not delay. Permanent damage can occur without urgent medical treatment

Priapism is a rare but serious side effect of ED medications. Monitor the duration of your erection.

Anything lasting more than 4 hours is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment to avoid permanent damage.

Always follow your doctor’s dosage instructions and report any unusual responses.
