These pills aren’t an aphrodisiac – you won’t get an erection just by taking it. They work by helping blood flow when you’re sexually aroused. So you’ll still need foreplay or stimulation for it to work.
How to Take (Sildenafil)
Take the Viagra about one hour before you plan to have sex. It works best on an empty stomach, so try to avoid heavy meals before taking it – a big steak dinner can delay its effect. It will start to work in 30–60 minutes and last for around 4 hours, so you have a window in that time.
How to Take (Tadalafil)
Cialis is a bit slower – give it 2 hours to kick in if you’re using it as needed. The upside is it lasts up to a day and a half (36 hours) in your system. You could take it Friday night and it may still help with erections on Saturday. If daily: Take the 5 mg Cialis at the same time every day, regardless of when you have sex. Don’t double up if you miss a dose – just take it the next day as usual.
Alcohol
It’s okay to have a small amount of alcohol, but don’t overdo it. Too much alcohol can make it harder to get an erection and increase side effects like dizziness.
Side Effects
You might feel your face warm up (that flushing effect), or get a stuffy nose or headache – those are common. Usually mild. If you get a bit of heartburn, that’s because it relaxes some muscles – an antacid can help.
When It Doesn’t Work Immediately
Don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work perfectly the first time. It’s normal that it might take a few tries to get the timing right and see what it does for you. Make sure you’re sufficiently stimulated and give it multiple attempts – try it on 5 or 6 different occasions if needed
Emergency Symptoms
If you lose vision suddenly, or lose hearing, or you get an erection that just won’t go away past 4 hours – those are rare but serious. In those cases, don’t wait – seek medical help right away. If you ever feel faint or have severe chest pain during sex, stop and call for help.
