Why is an injection kit mandatory with my TRT medication?

An article explaining why Injection Kits are mandatory with all low testosterone medication orders

Written by Ash Bryant

As we have migrated to Hormn, all TRT orders now have a mandatory injection kit added to them, which costs $50.

What's in the kit

  • Sterile vials

  • Intramuscular (IM) needles

  • Syringes

  • Alcohol swabs

Why is this mandatory, even if I already have supplies?

As the prescriber of your treatment, Hormn is committed to supporting the safe administration of your medication. To ensure patients have access to suitable, sterile, and high-quality injection supplies, we provide an injection kit with every treatment order.

We cannot verify the quality, sterility, suitability, or condition of injection equipment sourced elsewhere. Using inappropriate, damaged, expired, or unsuitable equipment may increase the risk of infection, inaccurate dosing, or injection site complications.

By including a standardised injection kit with every order, Hormn ensures patients receive appropriate injection supplies from a trusted supplier while maintaining a consistent standard of care.

Why intramuscular, not subcutaneous

Primoteston is an oil-based solution containing castor oil and benzyl benzoate. This vehicle is too viscous for subcutaneous (under the skin) injection and is not approved for this route of administration.

Subcutaneous injection of Primoteston can cause:

  • Localised tissue reactions and granuloma formation

  • Poor and inconsistent absorption

  • Significant injection site pain

The TGA-approved product information for Primoteston specifies intramuscular administration only.

The IM needles included in your kit are the correct gauge for this medication.

Why are sterile vials included?

Hormn prescribes small, frequent biweekly doses rather than a single large fortnightly injection. This produces more stable testosterone levels and reduces side effects associated with hormone peaks and troughs.

Sterile vials are required to draw and measure each partial dose safely, maintaining sterility between doses.
