A quick guide to creating measurements for live experiences

Live experiences refer to a situation where you're measuring reactions to an experience that's happening for a set of people live and in real-time - for example, a meeting, conference, shopping trip, or concert. Measuring with Immersion means you can see how people are connecting in a real-life setting as it happens! No need to interrupt the experience to ask them about it, or rely on their ability to report their feelings after the fact...which is actually a pretty faulty measure, it turns out! No need to take our word for it either, the disadvantages of self-report data are actually well-known by academics in the field of Psychology and beyond! Check out this article to learn a bit more about the shortcomings of asking people how they feel.

For some ideas on live experiences you can easily measure, see below:

  • Training or educational sessions - understand what information is being absorbed and what might necessitate a follow-up

  • Team meetings - identify how psychologically safe team members feel with each other, and find opportunities to make meetings more efficient

  • Corporate events - measure reactions during practice sessions for insights on how to reorganize agenda or change delivery to maximize event impact

  • Live events and performances (concerts, plays, etc) - find out which parts of the experience are really moving the audience and which parts could be improved

  • Shopping (online or in-person) - understand whether there are important points of friction in the experience that will lead customers to stray from your brand

  • Tours and attractions - measure the journey to find points where you can make the visitor experience something to write home about

  • Competitions and matches (sports, video gaming, etc) - measure the audience for opportunities to maximize sponsorship reach

And more! Feel free to get creative!

Immersion can be used to track participant engagement in any live activity with just a smartwatch or fitness sensor, the Immersion Mobile app, and a connection to WiFi or cellular data.

Simply click on the blue ‘Add New’ button from the dashboard, choose the ‘Live Experience’ button and then follow the steps below (use the quick-click to navigate to the section of interest):

Step 1 - Select the content you want to measure

  • After clicking the “Live Experience” button, you can choose from a range of specific event categories that you would like to set up. These include “Training/Education”, “Corporate meetings/events”, etc. If your event does not fit into a category, feel free to click “Other” and create your own description.

  • This selection will feed into the Industry Norms shown after data collection, which are based on all experiences ever measured in that category, so choose wisely!

  • If you don't see a category that represents the experience, choose the 'Other' category and enter the details - we will intermittently update the categories as we get more data in new areas!

Step 2 - Set the name and time of the experience

  • During setup, you're asked to indicate the time the experience will take place - this enables us to notify participants to start data collection a few minutes before the event starts.

  • Not sure exactly when the experience will start? You can always set the time and update it later. Also, you can always navigate to the 'Analyze' tab and click 'Start Now' for initiating collection on the fly!

Step 3 - Invite participants

  • Link: The Immersion platform allows you to invite participants through our system by simply adding their email addresses during or after setup. Doing so will initiate an email to them with the necessary instructions for downloading the app. We also provide a shareable invite link which you can embed in an email you craft or post through Slack, LinkedIn, etc.! For more information, please head to this article.

  • Calendar: You can also invite participants to a Live Experience through your calendar application (Outlook, Google Calendar, iCal, etc), and Immersion will automatically create your event, send invites, and start/stop the event according to your schedule. To initiate this process, simply add experience@immersion-event.com to your event invite so that we can do all the setup for you.

  • Connectivity Hub: If you have purchased an Immersion Smart Hub, you have the ability to setup experiences with the connectivity hub as the method of data collection. For more information about connectivity hubs, please reach out to your Immersion Customer Success contact.

Once you’ve invited your participants, you’ll be prompted to name the event and set up the time.

Nerdy Tip: If plans change, you can always change the event time after you create the experience, so do not fret!

Optional step - Add an agenda

  • You can add an agenda to easily see how each agenda item connected with the audience in terms of immersion and safety.

  • You can add agenda items manually or by uploading a CSV file that lists agenda items.

  • Additional agenda items and agenda times can be updated after the measurement.

  • For more information on the agenda feature, head here.

Step 4 - Monitor participant progress

  • Keep an eye on participant progress in the ‘Setup’ tab of your experience.

  • The information here will let you know who has downloaded the app and is ready to go, and who may need help along the way.

  • You can also look at this tab when the experience is live to see who is actively sending data, by looking for those with green icons to the left of their email address.

  • For more information on monitoring participants, see this article.

Step 5 - Measurement goes live!

  • At the time you scheduled the measurement, the event will automatically go live and be available to start receiving measurements! Participants who have the experience in their app queue (because they were invited with our system or clicked the shareable invite) will get a notification to start data collection a few minutes before the experience begins.

Nerdy tip: If your participant signs in to the app as a 'Guest' instead of creating an account with the email address they registered with or were invited with, the experience will not automatically show up in their app. They will need to enter the Experience ID, which is the 5-digit alpha-numeric code at the end of the shareable invite link.

  • Participant immersion and safety levels will be tracked throughout the experience, and you can watch the results come in real-time on the 'Second-by-Second' tab! For more information on the participant experience, see here.

Step 6 - Start to get insights!

  • When the measurement completes, insights await! See full detail on getting insights here.

  • Use the Report Card tab to get a temperature check on how your content connected with the audience. Learn more here!

  • Review the timeline data in the Second-by-Second tab to see your optimization map!! Learn more here.
