How to set a correct answer to allow a task to be automarked

Authors can create tasks that have a set "correct" answer(s) to be automatically marked by the system. You'll see this under the Correct tab when creating a task.

How to set alternate correct answers

An alternate correct answer is an answer that would also be marked correct by the system.

Simply select the + to add alternate answers.

Note: Some tasks may also have the option to Match all possible responses which gets the system to look across all the correct answers you've set when marking the learner's response.

You can set as many alternate correct answers as you like. But... if you find yourself needing to set a large number, reach out to our team, there may be a different task type that would make things easier.

Task types that can be automarked

Only some of our tasks can be marked automatically (obviously things like essays can't really be automarked).

  • Multiple choice

  • True/false

  • Multiple choice matrix

  • Cloze with dropdown

  • Close type response

  • Cloze matching

  • Text highlight

  • Order

  • Match

  • Classification

  • Image dropdown

  • Select hot spots

  • Charts and graphs

  • Number line

  • Bar chart

  • Math cloze (automarked)

What learners see when they complete an automarked task

When learners submit an automarked task (assessed or non-assessed) they'll immediately see how they were marked by the system. That is, green ticks for any answer(s) that were correct, and red crosses for any answers that were incorrect.

Note: This shows how the learner was marked rather than what the correct answers are.

Learners will also be shown any automatic feedback (displayed directly below the response area) after submitting their response.

Note: Quizzes are a little different as they are made up of a number of tasks so learners won't see how they were marked until they have submitted the whole quiz (or, they may not see how they were marked at all). This depends on how the author has set up the quiz when they were creating it. For more detail on how quizzes are marked, see Add a quiz to your course.

What facilitators see when learners complete automarked tasks

Facilitators see the outcome for automarked tasks in the Mark column in either the Learners or Marking tabs of the Class Console.

The ticks and crosses shown in the Mark column are based on whether the learner got every item in the task correct (tick) or if they had one or more items incorrect (cross).

Note: Facilitators can also see the detail of exactly which items (within a task) learners had correct/incorrect by selecting View.
