Enhancements are where you

  1. improve the condition of a baseline habitat or

  2. transform a baseline habitat into a higher-distinctiveness habitat of the same time

Enhancement should be the first thing that you do to see if you can secure on-site gains.

To enhance a habitat, you can use the BNG Solution Finder. When you go there, the Enhancement option should be highlighted.

The different baseline habitats on your site will be listed as a set of grey boxes:

Clicking on the box will open up all the transformations that are permitted. You can read more about this here. If no enhancements are possible, it will say no enhancements are allowed:

This will come up for one of the following reasons:

  • The baseline habitat is already all enhanced/being built over

  • The baseline habitat is one that can't be enhanced (e.g. developed land, sealed surface).

If you can't get the necessary uplift via uplift, you should click on Creation.
