  • How do contracts work in a nanny share?

Your nanny will have two contracts: one with you and one with the other family you are sharing with.

As with our standard contract, we'll share a draft version with you, the employer, prior to issuing a final version.

The shared hours are split over both contracts with half of the hours on your contract and half of the hours on the other families contract. The contract will also set out the rates for any periods of 'sole care' hours; where the nanny might only work for one family and not part of the nanny share arrangement.

Apart from this, they are the same as our standard contracts. You can read more about the employment contract here.

  • Can there be more than 2 families in a nanny share?

No - nanny shares can take place between a maximum of 2 families. Any more than this and the nanny would legally have to be a registered childminder.

  • Do I have to find a family who need exactly the same days and times each week?

No! Nanny shares come in all shapes and sizes and really depend on what works for each family. For example, two families could share one nanny for all 5 days a week, or one family could employ the nanny for 5 days a week while the other family only employs them for 3 of those days.

However, in order for the arrangement to be classified as a nanny share there must be some hours that are shared by both families. Bear in mind, for the hours that aren’t shared, one family would be paying the standard £15.50-£20.50 per hour rate, as opposed to the £10.45-£11.75 per hour shared care rate.

  • Why do I need a PAYE scheme if I’m in a nanny share?

If you are part of a nanny share then we need to set you up with a PAYE scheme. This is because your nanny will effectively have two employers: you and the other family. When an employee has a second job HMRC requires their pay to be processed via PAYE. This lets us report your nanny’s pay to HMRC for you, and keep you compliant with all the tax aspects of being an employer. Don’t worry, we’ll set this up, run it on your behalf and cover any costs.

You’ll also need a National Insurance number - if you don’t already have one, you can apply for one here.
