Understanding the distinction between 'editions' and 'variants' of a fine art print product is important, especially if you’re planning on selling limited editions. This article clarifies these terms and guides you through the process of creating each on our platform.
What is an edition ?
An edition is defined by three elements :
the artwork itself (ie your uploaded file)
the paper used
the size of the print
In other words, an edition represents a specific version of an artwork, distinguished by these attributes.
📌 Important
What you should remember is that an edition corresponds to a specific print size of an artwork.
If you upload a file and then create two print sizes—an A4 print and an A3 print—you'll have two editions on your Studio detailed product page (LINK) - an "A4 Edition" and an "A3 Edition".
You can create as many editions as you want for a specific artwork.
In your Studio products dashboard, you can see how many editions your product has in the second column :
What is a variant?
A variant is a customization of an edition. It involves options like framing or mats that can be applied to an existing edition.
📌 Important
Remember that a variant belongs to an edition and is a specific version of that edition.
For example, if you sell an A4 print in two versions, one framed and the other unframed (just the print), then you'll have two variants in this A4 Edition.
In your Studio product dashboard, you can see how many variants your product has in total in the third column:
Adding a new edition to a product (ie new print size)
In your Studio product page, click on "Add print size" in the top right corner of your page
It will bring you to the live configurator (LINK) where you'll be able to create a new print size - choose your print size and save
The new edition just created will appear at the bottom of your product page
Adding a new variant to an edition
In your Studio product page, scroll to the edition tab you want to add a variant to
In the top right corner of this tab, click on "Add variant"
It will bring you to the live configurator (LINK) where you'll be able to create a new variant for this print size - create and save your variant
The new variant just created will appear at the bottom of your edition tab
The flexibility of creating different editions and variants allows you to offer the same artwork in multiple formats, sizes, and styles, catering to a wider range of preferences and increasing the appeal of your work.
Plus you’ll never have to worry about keeping the count for your limited editions ever again.
