According to our insurance conditions, we currently do not cover any costs for treatment measures or operations due to congenital, genetic hereditary diseases or breed-specific diseases (e.g. correction of malformations or deformities). This applies regardless of when the disease was first observed.
This exclusion does not apply to the diagnoses specifically mentioned in paragraph 2.2.1. of our insurance conditions. These specific illnesses have a special waiting period of 18 months:
Hip dysplasia (HD)
Elbow dysplasia (ED)
Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD)
Patellar luxation (kneecap jumps out of position)
Eyelid malpositions (entropion, ectropion)
Brachycephalic syndrome
FORL (Feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions/feline tooth resorption)
With regard to the assessment of whether a disease is due to a predisposition or external influences, we take into consideration many factors.
We do not have a specific list of breed-specific diseases that are not covered. We do have a list of breed-specific illnesses that are covered in our insurance packages after 18 months (see 2.2.1.). Our claims experts are familiar with most breed-specific diseases and, in the event of a claim, we are guided by the diagnosis and judgement of the attending vet and may obtain a second opinion in complex cases.
