Does Lassie pet insurance cover the cost of microchipping?

Yes, Lassie pet insurance covers the cost of microchipping under its preventive care budget (Vorsorgepauschale). This budget is included in Lassie's health insurance plans and can be used for various preventive care services, including microchipping. Below, we provide a detailed overview of the coverage, conditions, and reimbursement process.

Coverage Details

Microchipping is an eligible expense under Lassie's preventive care budget. The annual budget varies depending on your chosen plan:

  • Mini Plan: €35 per insurance year

  • Midi Plan: €100 per insurance year

  • Maxi Plan: €140 per insurance year

The preventive care budget can also be used for other services, such as:

  • Issuance of an EU pet passport (including microchip implantation or tattooing)

  • Health checks and preventive examinations

  • Vaccinations

  • Deworming

  • Flea and tick prevention (must be prescribed by a veterinarian, and the invoice must include the pet's details such as name, breed, and chip number)

  • Dental prophylaxis and tartar removal

  • Nail trimming

  • Anal gland expression

  • Spay/neuter without medical indication (Maxi plan only)

Conditions for Reimbursement

  1. Unique Identifier Requirement: Lassie requires each insured pet to have a unique identifier, such as a microchip or tattoo, before processing the first claim. If your pet is not yet microchipped, you can use the preventive care budget to cover the cost of the procedure. Claims submitted before the microchip information is provided will be paused and processed once the identifier is on file.

  2. Deductible Application: The selected deductible for your plan applies to the preventive care budget. For example, if you have a 20% deductible, you will cover 20% of the microchipping cost, and Lassie will reimburse the remaining amount up to the budget limit.

How to Submit a Claim

To get reimbursed for microchipping:

  1. Ensure your pet is microchipped or tattooed and that the identifier is registered with Lassie.

  2. Obtain an invoice from your veterinarian that includes the pet's details (e.g., name, breed, and chip number).

  3. Submit the invoice through Lassie's claim submission process.

Additional Notes

  • The preventive care budget is available from the start of the insurance policy and is not subject to the 30-day waiting period.

  • Microchipping is often bundled with the issuance of an EU pet passport, which is also covered under the preventive care allowance.

  • The OP (surgery-only) plan does not cover microchipping costs.

By understanding the coverage and conditions for microchipping under Lassie's preventive care budget, you can ensure your pet receives the necessary identification while maximizing your insurance benefits.
