Can my pet with a pre-existing condition get cover?

Lassie can insure pets that have pre-existing conditions, but those conditions themselves won't be covered. It's important to understand what that means in practise

A pre-existing condition is defined as any medical or behavioural condition your pet has suffered from in the 24 months before your policy start date — whether or not it was diagnosed or showing symptoms at the time.

Any such condition, and anything related to it, won't be covered under your policy.

Only new conditions that arise after you're insured will be eligible for a claim.

A couple of things worth knowing:

  • Bilateral conditions (e.g. cruciate ligaments, eyes, ears, hips, knees) are treated as one condition, so if it reoccurs on the other side of the body, it's still considered pre-existing

  • Related conditions (e.g. diabetes and diabetic cataracts) are also treated as one condition

  • Conditions your pet fully recovered from more than 24 months ago could be covered if they come back (for example, a bout of kennel cough from 3 years ago)

If you're unsure whether something counts as a pre-existing condition, feel free to ask before you buy, I'm always happy to help clarify. 💙
