Is cruciate ligament surgery covered? 🦓

Yes. Cruciate ligament surgery is covered up to your full vet fee limit on Bronze, Silver and Gold.

One thing worth understanding is that cruciate ligaments are what we call a bilateral condition, meaning a condition that can affect the same body part on both sides of your pet's body. We treat both knees as a single condition.

In practice, that means:

  • If your pet needs surgery on the second knee in the same policy year, you will not pay the excess again, though the co-payment still applies

  • If it happens in a new policy year, the excess applies again

  • If a cruciate ligament problem was a pre-existing condition on one side, a problem on the other side will also be treated as pre-existing and will not be covered

The same principle applies to other bilateral conditions, such as eyes, ears, shoulders, legs and hips. 🐾
