Alliance: Quantum/Galaxy Touch

Card Reader Installation Guide for Alliance machines (Speed Queen / Huebsch) equipped with a touch screen (Midas/Galaxy Touch models)

K
Written by Kurt Bernhard

This installation guide covers Alliance's Touch control Washers and Dryers (Quantum Touch for Speed-Queen, Galaxy Touch for Huebsch).

The Card Reader uses Serial communication with these machines. Some example model numbers include HCT060VY0VXB80BA00, SCT040VY0VXB60BA00, HCT060VCAFXB60BA00, SCT100VCAVX and more.

Currently, vend pricing is entirely controlled by the machine, not through the Laundroworks (LaundroPortal)

Installation Steps

Step 1: Turn Machine Power OFF

It is always recommended to power the machine off before install the card readers.

Step 2: Remove Coin Drop (for Card-Only Installs)

Skip this step if the machine is "card-ready", or if this is a new coin-op machine without a coin drop installed.

The Card Reader's will mount to the section where the Coin Drop has been removed/is normally installed.

Step 3: Number the Card Reader using the reader's DIP switches

Review our: Reader DIP Switch settings article for details on how to set the Card Reader's Machine Type, and Reader Number.

You need to do this BEFORE mounting the Card Readers onto the machines, as accessing the back of the card reader is required.

Step 4: Reader Signal Wire Connections

Connect the signal connector to the machine's Front-End control board:

Note: If doing a Hybrid (Coin + Card) installation;
if the Coin Drop stops functioning after you've enabled the Serial Payment System setting on the machine, see the Hybrid Coin+Card Install - Coin Drop Functionality Issue section of this article

Step 5: Reader Power Wire Connections

Connect the Card Reader's power connection to get power to the card reader.

On these machine's there are 2 options for reader power:

  • Option 1 - Getting 12Vdc from the machine's Front-end Control Board

  • Option 2 - Getting 12Vdc from the machine's 24V transformer (need to remove the harness adaptor pre-connected on the reader harness):

Option 1 - Front-End Control Board Power:

Plug the 12Vdc plug in to the Washer/Dryer's Front-end Control Board:

Option 2 - 24Vac machine transformer:

Connect the Card Reader's 2-wire power connector (Blue and Red wires) to the 24Vac transformer inside the machine.

You need to remove the adaptor harness when using this power option:

Examples showing the 24Vac transformer connection:

Step 6: Configure the Machine-side Settings

Set the machine for Serial communication (Card Mode) using the touch screen on the machine.
This is done through the Machine's System Menu on it's touch screen control.

In order to get into the machine's programming menu:

  • in the case of Washers, ensure the Washer's top lid is OPEN

  • in the case of Dryers, you will need to disconnect the white connectors shown below:

Once you've done the above, to get into the machine's System Menu, press and hold the top of the screen where you see the horizontal line:

Once in the Machine's Programming menus, you will need to confirm the following settings are enabled:

Card Only Installations (click to expand)

"Card Reader" setting is enabled

"Serial Payment System" setting is enabled

Hybrid (Coin + Card) Installations (click to expand)

"Coin" setting is enabled

"Card Reader" setting is enabled

"Serial Payment System" setting is enabled

Once you've confirmed that both the Card Reader setting and Serial Payment System are enabled;

exit the machine settings menu, save the changes, then power cycle the machine.

Note: In many cases, power cycling the machine after enabling these settings is not strictly necessary, as the machine will usually switch into Serial communication mode after waiting approx. 5 mins.

In some cases, a power cycle is required, and it is recommended to leave the machine powered OFF for 2 full minutes before powering the machine back ON.

This will ensure that any capacitors storing electricity can fully discharge, then when plugging the machine back into power, it should switch into Serial communication mode at that point.

Configure Top-Off (For Dryers)

If you're setting up the Dryers so that the Full Cycle time and price, is the same as the Top-off time and price (i.e. same cost to Start dryer as to add additional time to it), then set the Top-Off Status setting to Full Cycle Only:

Hybrid (Coin + Card) Install - Coin Drop Functionality Issue (click to expand)

Aside from Card Reader mounting, Hybrid (Coin + Card) installations are typically done the same way as Card Only installs.

However, in some cases (we've seen this issue with some of the Softmount versions of these machines specifically), when you enable the "Serial Payment System" setting through the machine's controls; this will automatically disable the machine's coin drop functionality.

Generally speaking, when installing in a Hybrid configuration, you'll need to confirm the "Coin", "Card Reader", and "Serial Payment System" settings are all ENABLED on the machine side:

However, if you test the machine, and only the Card Reader is working with these settings enabled but the Coin Drop stops working (Coin Drop only works when Serial Payment System is disabled);

it means the specific version of your machine is disabling the Coin Drop functionality whenever Serial Payment System is enabled automatically.

In these cases, to get the Hybrid configuration working, you will need to DISABLE the "Card Reader", and "Serial Payment System" settings on the machine (the "Coin" setting remains enabled), and use a different Card Reader board (a Generic Relay card reader board) in order to emulate the coin drop's payment signal:

A Generic Relay card reader cannot send a pulse through the machine's Serial port, it will instead be connected to the machine's coin input.

To do this, you'll need to splice the reader's Signal wires (GREEN and WHITE), in series with the BLUE wire coming from the machine's Coin Drop:

In this configuration, because the card reader has no way of knowing what cycle option is being selected; ALL cycle options must be set to cost the same price.

Contact the Laundroworks Support team for help configuring a Generic Relay Card Reader, to operate in a Normally Closed fashion, for this type of Hybrid configuration.

Step 7: Activate the Card Reader

Proceed to secure the reader to the machine and power it ON.

For details on reader mounting, review the Card Reader Mounting section of this article.

Once the machine is powered ON, the card reader will also power ON and be in a deactivated state:

Activate the Card Reader using the Activation Card for this specific location:

Note: you MUST use the Activation Card for THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION,
or else the card reader will not appear on the LaundroPortal for this location.

This will activate the reader and programs the reader with the location's specific Support and Location IDs.

The Card Reader will then automatically connect to VAC01's wireless network and once connected, and will be visible on the LaundroPortal once it passes the Wireless Test and displays the message "Good Signal!":

Note: if you have not yet confirmed the machine is configured for Serial communication mode, the card reader WILL display a "No Comm with Machine" Error.

Card Reader Mounting

Card Only Installations (click to expand)

If you're installing readers on Coin-op washers/dryers,

the reader should mount against the existing Coin Drop plate (Card Only installs).

In some cases, you may need to drill a couple of small holes for the threaded-studs on the card reader's mounting plate.

The cable harness should fit through the existing slot for the Coin Drop.

HOWEVER, if you received the following reader mounting brackets:

Then no drilling should be required.

To install these readers, you'll completely remove the coin drop plate, and use the mounting bars to secure the reader to the machine.

Remove the Coin Drop plate, and reinstall just the trim piece; the reader then sits over it and is secured from the inside of the machine using the horizontal bars on the provided mounting bracket:

For Card Ready versions of these machines (Card Only installs),

the machine plate will already have holes that match the studs (3 or 4 studs) on our reader's mounting hardware:

These versions of machines will also NOT require any drilling to get the reader's mounted:

Hybrid (Coin + Card) Installations (click to expand)

You will receive a 3-Stud reader mounting plate, and custom holes will need to be drilled into the machine since the Coin Drop is not being removed.

You will receive the following mounting plate for Washers:

And the following mounting plate for Dryers:

Both Washer and Dryer reader mounting plates have the same 3 Stud layout,

however the Dryer mounting plate is designed so the Card reader itself can be installed/removed separate from it's mounting plate.

Setting Vend Pricing

Unlike for non-Touch alliance models,

vend pricing for touch models is entirely controlled by the machine directly (you can also control them through Alliance network software if equipped).

Our card readers use Serial communication to stay in sync with the machine automatically, so once pricing is set on the machine side, the machine will update the card reader's pricing automatically.

There is NO vend pricing that needs to be setup through the LaundroPortal, however it is still recommend to create custom machine ground via the LaundroPortal's Manage Groups menu to take advantage of reports by different groups of machines.
