Laundrylux - Hero Dryers

K
Written by Kurt Bernhard

This installation guide covers single and stack Hero Dryers; as well as Hero Washers being installed in a Hybrid (Coin + Card) configuration.

These reader uses Pulse communication (Coin Drop emulation) in order to trigger payment on the machine. Some example model numbers include DSTR3535 and more.

If you are installing readers on a Hero Washer, in a Card-Only configuration, you need to follow our Laundrylux - Hero Washers article.

Required Parts

  • Card Reader Kit

    • The reader board type MUST be "Generic Relay" - Part 3: ASSY-02-02-11

  • Card Reader Wiring Harness

    • Part #: 02-06-49

Installation Steps

Step 0: Number the machines in the location

Before proceeding, it is recommended that you assign numbers and labels to each machines in the laundry room/building.

Step 1: Turn Machine Power OFF

It is always recommended to power the machine off before install the card readers.

Step 2: Remove Coin Drop (Card-Only Installs)

The Card Reader will be installed in the area where the Coin Drop is removed.

If you are installing the reader in a Hybrid (Coin + Card) configuration this skip can be skipped.

If you are doing a Card-Only install on a Hero Washer, you need to be following our Laundrylux - Hero Washers article; as this guide only applies to Hero Dryers

Step 3: Number the reader using the DIP switches

Review our: Reader DIP Switch settings article for details on how to set the Card Reader's Machine Type, and Reader Number.

You need to do this BEFORE mounting the Card Readers onto the machines, as accessing the back of the card reader is required.

Step 5: Card Reader Pulse/Start and Power Connection

Reader Power Connection (click to expand)

Connect the small 2-pin connector to the mating connector for power:

Reader Pulse/Start Connection (click to expand)

This step will differ based on if this is a Card Only install, or a Hybrid (Coin + Card) install:

Card Only Installations (click to expand)

In this setup, the Card Reader is emulating a Coin Drop, so we'll be using the exact same Coin 1 input wires that the Coin Drop is currently using.

You'll be splicing the reader's WHITE wire into the WHITE wire from the Coin Drop (you'll be removing the coin drop entirely, so you're actually splicing the white wire to the same Coin 1 input wire that the Coin Drop's WHITE wire was connecting to originally).

Splice the reader's GREEN wire into the GREEN wire from the Coin Drop (the coin drop is being removed, so you're splicing this wire to the Coin 1 input wire that the coin drop's GREEN wire was connecting to originally).

You will likely need to cut the GREEN/WHITE reader wires, out from the 7-PIN connector (which is NOT used on Hero Dryers), in order to splice them into the machine's input wires directly:

Hybrid (Coin + Card) Installations (Washers and Dryers) (click to expand)

This setup is basically the exact same as the Card Only install noted above, except because the coin drop is remaining and will likely already be using Coin 1's machine input, you'll instead be splicing the reader signal wires into Coin 2's input harness (you DO NOT use the Serial connector on the Card Reader's Wiring harness):

You'll be splicing the WHITE wire from the Card Reader harness, to the Coin 2 input wire that would be connecting to the WHITE wire from the Coin Drop (The machine's Coin1 and Coin2 input connectors are the same, so if you're unsure which Coin2 input wire would be connecting to the white coin drop wire, plug the Coin Drop connector into Coin2's input temporarily, to see which PIN the Coin Drop's WHITE wire connects to, as this will let you know which Coin2 input wire to splice into).

Splice the GREEN wire from the reader's harness, into the Coin 2 input wire that would be connecting to the GREEN wire from the Coin Drop.

Step 6: Activate the Card Reader

Proceed to secure the reader, power ON the machine and Activate the card reader using the Activation Card for this specific location:

Note: you MUST use the Activation Card for THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION,
or else the card reader will not appear on the LaundroPortal for this location.

This will activate the reader and programs the reader with the location's specific Support and Location IDs.

The Card Reader will then automatically connect to VAC01's wireless network and once connected, will be visible on the LaundroPortal where you can configure it's vend prices.

Step 7: Configure Machine Side Settings

The Card Reader are emulating a Coin Drop, and only sends 1 pulse (1 "coin") to the machine to trigger payment, so the machine needs to be configured to start from the 1 Pulse it gets from the Card Reader

For Card Only installs:

  • Coin 1's input is set to $0.25 by default, to work with the coin drop correctly, so you'll adjust the Coin 1 Value setting to equal the full vend price of the machine

For Hybrid Coin+Card Installs:

  • The Coin Drop is connected to Coin 1's input, and the Card Reader is connected to Coin 2's input, so you'll be adjusting the Coin 2 Value setting to equal the full vend price of the machine (this setting is usually set to either $0.25 or $1.00 by default).

Which ever Coin input you have connected the Card Reader to, is the coin input you need to change the Value of so it equals the full Vend Price of the machine.

This will ensure that 1 tap of a Laundry Card satisfies the full vend price of the machine so it starts from 1 tap.

If you try to pay for the machine, and the price goes down, but doesn't go all the way to zero (maybe only $0.25, or $1 is being deducted from the vend price being displayed on the machine), then you'll know the Coin Value setting is not set correctly, as it needs to equal the machine's full vend price.

Note: For Hybrid installs
Be sure you are ONLY changing the coin value of the Coin input that the Card Reader is connected to.

You need the Coin input that the Coin Drop is connected to, to remain at $0.25, so quarters only take off $0.25 from the machine's vend price.

Setting Vend Pricing

Set the pricing of the card reader (this is what customers will pay when they tap their laundry card) using the LaundroPortal.

The price that gets displayed on the machine is separate from the card reader, and does NOT affect how much the card reader charges laundry cards.

For additional information about machine vend pricing, review our Configuring Card Reader/Machine Vend Prices article.

Troubleshooting

Below are problems commonly encountered during the installation of readers on Hero Dryers

Issue

Common Cause and Solution

Machine can be started without needing to use a Laundry Card

The Machine's vend price is currently set at $0.00

If the machine's vend price is set at $0, it goes into a free mode that does not required payment, so the machine can be started without using a laundry card.

Make sure the machine's vend price is set to something other than $0.00 so that the machine requires payment before starting

Tapping a Laundry Card to the reader takes the full payment from the Laundry Card, but only takes $0.25 off the machine's vend price

The machine's coin value setting does NOT match the machine's vend price.

Card readers installed on these machines are emulating a coin drop, and only send 1 pulse/"coin" to the machine when a card is tapped to the card reader.

By default, the machine's Coin Value setting will be set to $0.25 to work with a coin drop.

To allow the card reader to take the full vend price off the machine so it starts from 1 tap of a card, the machine's Coin Value setting must MATCH the machine's vend price.

This ensures that the 1 pulse/"coin" the machine gets from the reader satisfies the full vend price of the machine
