Laundrylux - Hero Washers

Installation Guide for Hero Washers

K
Written by Kurt Bernhard

This installation guide covers Laundrylux Hero (or Encore Pro) Washers (being installed in a Card ONLY configuration). These readers use Serial control to communicate with the machine's control board directly. Some example model numbers include WSTR25, WSTR35 and more.

If you are installing card readers on these machines, in a Hybrid Coin+Card Configuration, you'll want to follow our Laundrylux - Hero Dryers installation article, as Hero Washer and Dryer readers, in a Hybrid configuration, use the same reader boards, and are connected to the machine's coin drop input in the same manner.

Required Parts

  • Card Reader Kit

    • The reader board type MUST be "Generic Serial" - Part #: ASSY-02-02-10. This board is for Card ONLY installs only (Hybrid installs are NOT covered by this guide):

  • Card Reader Wiring Harness

    • Part #: 02-06-49

Installation Summary

Installation Steps

Step 0: Number the machines in the location

Before proceeding, it is recommended that you assign numbers and labels to each machines in the laundry room/building.

Step 1: Configure Machine Side Settings

You need to enable serial communication on the Washer for the Card Reader to be able to communicate with it's control board.

To Enable Serial communication:

  • Enter Service Mode

  • Go into the CONFIGURATION menu

  • Go into the CONNECTION SETTINGS

  • Then set SERIAL PAYMENT DEVICE to ENABLED

Step 2: Turn Machine Power OFF

It is always recommended to power the machine off before install the card readers.

Step 3: Remove Coin Drop

For Card-Only installs, the Card Reader will be installed in the area where the Coin Drop is removed.

If you are installing the reader in a Hybrid (Coin + Card) configuration, you need to be following our Laundrylux - Hero Dryers installation article.

Step 4: Number the reader using the DIP switches

In order to configure a Card Reader to report as a specific Washer or Dryer number, you need to set the reader's DIP Switches to specific positions. These DIP Switches ONLY affect what the reader will display as for it's machine type (Washer/Dryer) and it's machine number:

Review our: Reader DIP Switch settings article for details on how to set the Card Reader's Machine Type, and Reader Number.

You need to do this BEFORE mounting the Card Readers onto the machines, as accessing the back of the card reader is required.

Step 5: Card Reader Serial and Power Connection

Simply snap together the small 2-pin connectors (for reader power) and the larger white connector (for Serial communication):

Step 6: Mounting the Card Reader

Step 7: Activate the Card Reader

Proceed to secure the reader to the machine in the area where the Coin Drop was removed, then Power ON the machine and Activate the card reader using the Activation Card for this specific location:

Note: you MUST use the Activation Card for THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION,
or else the card reader will not appear on the LaundroPortal for this location.

This will activate the reader and programs the reader with the location's specific Support and Location IDs.

The Card Reader will then automatically connect to VAC01's wireless network and once connected, will be visible on the LaundroPortal where you can configure it's vend prices.

Setting Vend Pricing

Set the pricing on the reader using the LaundroPortal.

The Card Reader will then update the machine's vend prices automatically.

For additional information about machine vend pricing, review our Configuring Card Reader/Machine Vend Prices article.

Troubleshooting

Below are problems commonly encountered during the installation of readers on these machines specifically.

For more general Card Reader troubleshooting, see the Card Reader Troubleshoot section of our Help Center.

Issue

Explanation and resolution

LaundroPortal displays a "Machine/Serial Communication" error

and

Card reader displays a "No Comm with Machine" error

In most cases, this likely indicates that the firmware running on the Hero control board needs to be updated to the latest firmware, using the USB drive that came with the Washer. to be able to communicate with the Card Reader.

Contact your distributor to get help with updating the Hero Washer firmware to the latest available version.

It's also recommended to contact the Laundroworks support team to ensure the Card Reader's firmware is running version 5.052 or higher:

If the Machine and Card Reader firmware is running the latest; this error can only be caused by 1 of 3 things:

  1. Issue with Card Reader

  2. Issue with Card Reader's wiring harness

  3. Issue with machine's control board

If you have a machine, of the same model, that's working correctly with it's Card Reader, try doing a reader swap test to see if the issue is the Card Reader itself.
If this reader works on a known working machine, then the reader is not the issue; put the readers back to their original position, and then try swapping just the reader's wiring harness between the same 2 machines.
