Security and Privacy for Lesson Recordings

Updated this week

TL;DR: LearnSpark uses secure SparkAI transcription to turn your spoken lessons into learning data. Your recordings are used only to update your student's progress and can be deleted at any time.

At LearnSpark, we know that your family's privacy is your top priority. When you use our audio recording feature, you are capturing precious learning moments. We take great care to ensure those moments stay private and secure while helping you track your child's growth.

How Audio Transcription Works

When you record a lesson, our platform uses SparkAI to listen to the audio and turn it into text. This process is highly secure and designed to protect your information.

Once the audio is turned into text, SparkAI analyzes the conversation to see what topics were covered. It looks for "lightbulb moments" and new skills your child demonstrated during the lesson.

πŸ’‘ Good to know: The audio recording is used strictly to update your student's Mastery Profile. It helps the platform understand exactly what your child is learning in real-time!

Where Is My Data Stored?

Your privacy is protected through every step of the recording process within your LearnSpark experience:

  • Encryption: All audio files are encrypted. This means they are scrambled so that unauthorized people cannot listen to them.

  • Private Processing: Your data is never used to "train" public models. Your family's information stays private to your account.

  • Mastery Updates: The text from your recording undergoes skills decomposition. This is where SparkAI breaks down the conversation into specific academic skills to fill in the gaps in your child's progress.

Updating the Mastery Profile

The best part of audio recording is how it saves you time. Usually, you would have to type out a long summary of what happened. With audio, SparkAI does the work for you.

It identifies the subjects mentioned and automatically updates the Mastery Heatmap. This ensures that even if you are "unplugged" and talking while hiking or driving, the learning still counts toward your official records.

How to Delete Your Recordings

You are always in control of your data. If you decide you no longer want a recording stored, you can remove it easily:

  1. Go to the lesson or activity where the recording was made.

  2. Find the Audio Transcript section.

  3. Click the Delete (trash can) icon next to the file.

⚠️ Heads up: Once you delete an audio file or its transcript, it is gone forever. LearnSpark cannot recover deleted audio files for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LearnSpark listening to me all the time?
No. The microphone only activates when you manually click the record button. We never record in the background without your permission.

Who can see my transcripts?
Only you and any authorized collaborators you have invited can see your transcripts. This keeps your LearnSpark experience private to your family.

Does recording a lesson cost SparkAI credits?
Yes. Using SparkAI to transcribe and analyze audio uses credits from your monthly balance. This covers the work the system does to update your child's mastery profile.

How do I request a full data deletion?
If you want to remove all your data, including all recordings and transcripts, you can do so in your Account Settings under the data management section. Check our article on "Managing Your Data and Deletion Requests (GDPR)" for more help.

Can I opt-out of audio recording?
Absolutely! Audio recording is an optional tool. You can always choose to type your summaries or log activities manually if you prefer.
