How to Personalize Lessons with Themes

Updated over a week ago

TL;DR: Make learning exciting by weaving your child's favorite hobbies, like Minecraft or Space, into their daily lessons and projects using SparkAI.

Every parent knows that a child who is excited about a topic learns faster and remembers more! At LearnSpark, we use those passions to make schoolwork feel like a personal adventure through a feature we call the Interest Weaver.

The Interest Weaver is a core part of the LearnSpark experience. It takes your child's unique interests and weaves them into their lessons and activities through SparkAI.

Instead of a boring math problem about apples, SparkAI might create a challenge about trading emeralds in Minecraft or exploring distant galaxies. This keeps your student engaged and reaching their goals faster.

What are Student Themes?

In LearnSpark, we call your child's passions Themes. These are the "secret sauce" that make lessons feel personal and fun.

Whether your child loves dinosaurs, baking, or robotics, SparkAI uses these themes to wrap educational goals in a story they already love. This works for everything from long division to creative writing.

💡 Good to know: Using a theme doesn't change the academic difficulty. Your child still learns the same important skills, just in a way that feels like play!

How to Update Your Student's Interests

To get the most out of the Interest Weaver, you should keep your child's profile up to date. Follow these steps:

  1. From your Dashboard, click on the Students tab.

  2. Select the student profile you want to update.

  3. Look for the Themes & Interests section.

  4. To add a new interest, type a specific name like "Marine Biology" and press enter.

  5. You can "star" a specific interest to lock it as the default theme for future lessons.

  6. Click Save Profile to apply the changes. Great job!

⚠️ Heads up: If you leave old interests in the profile, SparkAI might still suggest them. Make sure to delete themes your child has outgrown!

How to Apply Themes to Lessons

You can apply a theme whenever you are generating a new lesson. Even if you haven't saved a theme to a profile, you can swap it on the fly.

  1. Go to the Lessons tab and click Create New Lesson.

  2. Select the student(s) who will be participating.

  3. In the Interest/Theme field, type in a specific topic.

  4. Click Generate with SparkAI. That's it—you're all set!

SparkAI will immediately build a lesson plan where every example is woven together with your chosen theme. This works for Projects and Quick Activities too!

Advanced Tips for Personalization

To make the LearnSpark experience even better for your family, try these helpful strategies:

  • Be Specific: Instead of just "Games," use "Roblox" or "Chess." SparkAI is very smart and can even include specific characters!

  • Rotate with Adventures: If you are traveling to the coast, change your theme to "Pirate History." If you select "learning activity" on a Quick Activity, SparkAI will tailor that outing to your current themes.

  • Provide Feedback: Use the Listen feedback tool after a lesson. This personalizes your LearnSpark experience by letting the system know which themes worked best.

  • Watch Your Credits: Updating profiles and generating lessons use SparkAI credits. This is because SparkAI is working to analyze changes and update the Mastery Profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Themes can I add at once?

You can add as many as you like! However, we recommend keeping 3 to 5 "active" themes. This helps the system stay focused on what your child currently loves.

Does updating themes or applying them cost SparkAI credits?

Yes, SparkAI credits are used when you save profile updates or generate lessons. This is because SparkAI is working to update your child's Mastery Profile and map their learning to specific standards.

What if SparkAI doesn't know about a niche interest?

SparkAI is very knowledgeable about many topics. For very rare hobbies, it helps to provide a little bit of context, like "Gubbins (a tabletop dice game)."

Can I change the theme after the lesson is generated?

Yes! If you want to try a different theme, click the Regenerate button and enter a new topic. Please note that regenerating uses SparkAI credits.

Does this work for different kids?

Absolutely! Each student has their own unique profile. One child might love "Ancient Egypt" while another is into "Robotics," and SparkAI will track them separately.
