Organizing matters: How to link related files and matters

In Matter Management, you can link related files or other matters to keep all relevant information connected in one place. This is helpful when, for example, the same matter has been created separately by mistake, or when you want to link a reference matter for easy access.

Link related files

In the matter details page, you can link related files in three ways:

  • Add files via [Linked files]

  • Attach files in the Timeline

  • Attach files in an Email

Add via [Linked files]

  1. Open the [Matters] list and select a matter.

  2. In the matter details, click [Linked files] on the right panel.

  3. Click [+ Add], then either upload a new file or select an existing file.

  4. Click [Link].
You can view details of the linked file under [File information] (available for contracts only).

To view related templates, click [Similar contracts] to see any relevant files.

Pin a File

You can pin any linked file so that it appears at the top of the [Linked files] list.
Click […] → [Pin] for the file you want to pin.

If multiple files are pinned, the latest version (newest upload date) appears at the top.

To unpin, click […] → [Unpin]. The file will return to its original position.

Attach in the Timeline

When you attach a file to a Timeline message, it will be automatically linked to that matter.

Attach in an Email

Attaching a file to an email message from the matter detail screen will also link the file to the matter.

💡 Info

From the file details page, you can check which matters a file is linked to under the [Matters] tab.

Link related matters

You can also link other matters to a given matter for better organization.

  • Use [Matters for reference] for cases where you want to cross-reference previous or related matters. This is a one-way link visible only from the source matter.

  • Use [Related matters] for cases like a master contract and a related addendum. This is a two-way link, visible from both matters.

How to link related matters

  1. Open the [Matters] list and select a matter.

  2. Click [Linked matters] in the right panel.

  3. Click [+ Add] under either [Matters for reference] or [Related matters].

  4. Search by matter name or select from the suggested list, check the box, and click [+ Add].

    • You can click [View] next to a candidate to see its details before linking.

Unlink files or matters

If you no longer need a file or matter to be linked:

  • Click […] → [Unlink] next to the file or matter in the list.
