Free Events: Why They Work + How to Host Them

Updated over 5 months ago

Free Events

Free events are a fantastic way to drive organic growth and generate leads for your coaching business. Free events are typically 30 - 60 minute sessions that take a variety of forms including:

  1. Information Sessions: “Nuts and Bolts of the GRE”, “Service Academy Applications 101”

  2. Ask Me Anything Events: “Dental School Interview AMA”, “MBA to MBB: AMA with Ex-Bain Manager & MBA Recruiter”

  3. Tactical Workshops: “Recruiting for PE: Tips and Strategies**”,** “Tightening the Screws: How to Optimize Strategies to Shave Seconds on Quant Problems”

  4. Live Mock Interviews: ”Live MBA Mock Interview”

Get creative! We love seeing the formats and topics that coaches come up with.

Additionally, glean inspiration from your clients and leads: what do they want to hear about? Chances are there are a lot more people out there that want to hear the same.

Building out content for an information session or workshop can be more work upfront, but tend to convert clients more than an AMA. Once you build out the content once, you can rerun the same event in the future.

For further inspiration, all upcoming free events being hosted by Leland coaches can be found here.

What’s the return on investment for doing a free event? The answer: 7x more earnings. On average, coaches who host a free event within a quarter earn 7x more than those who do not.

When submitting your event, make your title as specific as possible. This draws future clients in and will boost the amount of attendees you have. For example,

  1. “Writing Outstanding MBA Application Essays” > “Writing Outstanding Essays”

  2. “Advanced LSAT Strategies: Formal Logic” > “LSAT Strategies”

Best Practices for Events That Convert

  • Incorporate successful coaching stories naturally into your content

    • Example: “I actually had a client who was really struggling with drawing out her personal narrative. She kept hitting roadblocks on what her “why” was for business school. After a couple sessions of working together we were able to figure out a story that felt authentic and powerful. She got accepted to Wharton 2 months later.”

  • Mention things that a coach can help get more specific on and things outside the scope of the event that a coach can help with

    • Example: “Today we covered technical interviews, but if you want help with the entire IB recruiting process you can book a package with me to get personalized help with networking, behavioral and technical interviews, resumes, and recruiting strategy.”

      • “It can be hard to know where to start with test prep. I work with clients not just on GRE math hacks, but also with improving reading comprehension, logic questions, and overall test strategy.”

    • Example: “Developing this is something that a coach can help you with.”

  • Have a strong Call To Action at the end of the event

    • provide an exclusive discount code to those who attend the event, have a specific package that you are pushing, and make sure to direct people to your profile to book an intro call or trial session

TL;DR: You want clients to walk away feeling like they got value from your event and eager to book time with you to learn more.
