Student Experience Videos

Before administering the Practice Assesslets, we highly recommend that students watch the two Student Experience Videos provided in the Assesslet Training Guides. These videos offer valuable insight into the assessment process.

There are two separate guides available:

  • Grades 3-5 Guide

  • Grades 6-12 Guide

Part A covers:

  • The scenario

  • The research question

  • Multimodal sources

  • Item types and responder tools

Part B focuses on:

  • The extended response essay

These videos will help students feel more confident and prepared for the Practice Assesslets. Please be sure to review them before beginning the assessments.

Important Features of ELA Practice Assesslets:

  • Aligned to New GA K-12 ELA Standards

  • Follows GaDOE Blueprints with item types and scoring

  • Introduces Scenario to guide reading

  • Multimodal Sources (video and audio with closed captioning)

  • Includes TEI Items and Peer Revision for Grades 4, 6, and 7

  • Uses GaDOE Writer’s Checklist and 3-Trait Rubrics

  • No Hand Scoring—includes a Scoring and Feedback presentation for student use

  • Responder Tools: Highlighter, notepad, magnification, high contrast text, item flagging

  • Two Versions: (1) Grades 3-5 and (2) Secondary Grades 6-12

Purpose of Practice Assesslets:

These Assesslets help students understand the testing format, rigor, item types, and responder tools before taking scored Assesslets or state testing.

Scoring and Feedback Presentation:

Use the Scoring Presentation to guide students through the Assesslet, item by item. The presentation includes:

  • Questions

  • Answer key

  • Talking points

  • Suggested writing improvements

  • Writer’s Checklist to ensure all key elements are included

Facilitating Robust Conversations:

Teachers are encouraged to facilitate meaningful discussions during the Scoring and Feedback Presentation. This allows students to address misconceptions, ask questions, and gain clarity. The goal is to foster growth and confidence, not perfection, as students make corrections and improvements to their work. Encourage students to reflect on their learning process and support each other in their progress.

Administration Note:

  • Students do not submit the Practice Assesslet for scoring.

  • This is for instructional purposes only—students should reflect on mistakes and improve their writing.

  • No overall grade will be provided.

  • Students will not click "Finish"—instead, they will click "Save for Later" to continue working on the Practice Assesslet during the set times.
