PDF Search and Copy/Paste Functionality Changes
Overview
Some Lifeway digital PDF curriculum resources may no longer support search, copy, and paste functionality. This change affects certain PDF files that have been modified to comply with font licensing requirements.
Why Did This Change?
Lifeway became aware that many of our font licenses do not allow fonts to be embedded in PDF files. Continuing to provide editable PDFs would place Lifeway out of compliance with those licensing agreements. To comply with these requirements, PDF files were "scrubbed" of embedded fonts (also referred to as "flattened").
As a result, some PDF files:
Cannot be searched
Do not support copy and paste functionality
May be larger in file size than previous versions
What Products Are Affected?
This change applies to digital PDF curriculum files and is not limited to a single product line. Printed materials are not affected. The first files impacted were Summer Grid files, and some customers have reported concerns related to copy-and-paste functionality in adult curriculum resources.
Are There Any Workarounds?
Yes. Some PDF software applications offer text-recognition capabilities that may restore search, copy, and paste functionality.
For example, Adobe Acrobat Pro includes Optical Character Recognition (OCR) tools that can analyze the PDF and recreate searchable text. OCR results may vary, and fonts may appear different because the software approximates available fonts on the user's device.

Alternative File Formats
For many adult curriculum resources, Microsoft Word (DOC) versions of Leader Guides are available through the applicable Leader Packs and Ministry Grid Plus subscriptions. These files may provide an easier option for users who need editable content.
Looking Ahead
We understand the inconvenience this change has created for some church leaders and ministry teams. Lifeway is actively working with font license holders to identify a long-term solution that restores as much functionality as possible while remaining compliant with licensing requirements. We are hopeful that future files will regain search and copy/paste functionality.
