SMS templates let you save text messages you send often, so you can reuse them anytime instead of retyping. You can even drop in personalized details—like a customer's name or job info—that fill in automatically when the message goes out. This article shows you how to create, personalize, edit, and delete SMS templates in LMN.
In this article:
Before You Begin
Make sure you have the following before you start:
A verified SMS plan. If your plan isn't verified yet, see the SMS setup and verification guide for the steps to finish verifying it.
Security admin permission, which you need in order to save SMS templates.
⚠️ If your account is managed by a franchisor (for example Grounds Guys), your templates may be set up for you centrally. If that's the case, you may not see the option to add a new template.
Where to Find SMS Templates
You'll manage your SMS templates in Settings > SMS Notifications
Before jumping into your template list, it's worth knowing what the two panels at the top of this page show you:
The Account Details panel shows your verification status and the phone number your LMN-generated SMS messages are sent from.
The panel next to it shows the number of messages you've used from your package, plus your remaining balance under your subscription plan (before overage fees begin to apply). Use its View History button to pull up a record of every SMS your account has generated and sent.
Create an SMS Template
To create a new SMS template:
Go to Settings > SMS Notifications
Click the add button at the bottom right to open the New SMS Template window.
Give your template a name: click the pencil (edit) icon, type a name, and click the checkmark to confirm.
Type your message
Add any personalized details using the Personalize tool (see the next section).
Save the template
Add Personalized Details
Personalized details let you insert information—like a customer's name or job details—that fills in automatically when the message is sent. That way, every message feels personal without you having to type in the details each time.
Use the Personalize tool to add a detail to your message.
When you add one, it appears as a placeholder in double braces, like {{CustomerName}}. Leave the braces as they are—they tell LMN where to fill in the real information.
The actual details are filled in the moment the message is sent, so your customer sees the finished message (for example, "Hi Jane") rather than the placeholder.
Edit or Delete a Template
To update an existing template:
To edit: open the template, make your changes, and save. (Saving requires security admin permission.)
To delete: open the template's options menu and click Delete.
Message Length & Cost
LMN limits each SMS template to 250 characters total. Within that limit, every 156 characters of a message counts as one message segment when it's sent — so a longer message may go out as multiple segments (for example, a full 250-character message could count as up to 2 message charges).
Each segment counts as its own message against your subscription plan's balance, so keep character count in mind when building templates.
Even when a message is split into multiple segments, it will typically still appear to your customer as a single text.
Use the Send Preview option to preview a template on a real phone before using it at scale.
You can check how many segments a bulk send used from the View History button on the SMS Notifications page.
