Reward expiration date: never, rolling or fixed

How to choose how long a reward stays usable, and how to set a rolling expiration with a custom number of days.

Written by Oussama Guessous

Introduction

A reward's expiration date defines the point after which your customer can no longer use it. It is set when creating the reward, in the Rewards → list section.

💡 Not to be confused with points expiry, which is a global setting of your program and follows its own rules. See Points expiry.

The three available options

  • Your rewards never expire — the reward stays usable with no time limit. Suitable for a permanent perk or an ongoing business relationship.

  • Rolling expiration date — the reward expires a set time after the customer earns it. Each customer therefore has their own expiration date, counted from the moment the reward is granted to them.

  • Custom fixed expiration date — every customer shares the same deadline, whatever date they earned the reward on. Suitable for a seasonal campaign.

Rolling expiration: choosing the number of days

The rolling expiration now accepts a custom number of days: you decide exactly how long the reward stays usable after it is earned — 7, 21, 45 days, whatever suits your program.

How to set it up

  1. In your Loyoly back office, open Rewards → list, then create or edit a reward.

  2. In the Expiration date field, select rolling expiration date.

  3. Enter the number of days the reward should stay valid.

  4. Save the reward.

The countdown starts the moment the reward is granted to the customer. Once the window closes, the reward is automatically removed from their available rewards.

💡 The duration applies on every channel: online store as well as physical store (Cegid, Fastmag, custom POS).

Watch-outs

⚠️ If you change the duration on an existing reward, the change only applies to rewards granted after the change. Rewards your customers have already earned keep their original expiration date.

  • A very short window (under 7 days) generates complaints from customers who missed the deadline. If you are after urgency, 2 to 6 weeks is a good compromise.

  • A reward whose validity date has passed moves to the Expired status and is no longer visible to your community.

  • For all the other settings of the reward form, see Create a reward.

Example

A skincare brand grants a "-15% on your next order" reward when a customer reaches the Silver tier. Instead of a 3-month validity, it sets 21 days: the reward appears in the customer's account with a clear deadline, which tightens the purchase cycle without touching the points balance.
