Safe Mode

Safe Mode helps keep students focused during quizzes by detecting when they leave the quiz window or navigate away from Magma Math. Safe Mode is available only in Quiz Mode.

What Happens in Safe Mode?

If a student:

  • leaves the quiz tab

  • switches windows

  • opens another browser tab

  • exits the assignment

the quiz will automatically:

  • pause for that student

  • lock them out of the quiz until the teacher restarts it

Students will also see a warning message encouraging them to remain in the quiz.

Enable Safe Mode

  1. Create a new assignment.

  2. Enable Quiz Mode during assignment setup.

  3. Turn on the Safe Mode toggle.

  4. Create the assignment.

Start the Quiz

When you are ready for students to begin:

  1. Open the quiz.

  2. Click Start.

Students will now be monitored through Safe Mode while the quiz is active.

Manage Quiz Access

Teachers can manage quiz status for:

  • the entire class

  • individual students

From the heatmap, teachers can:

  • Start

  • Pause

  • End

quizzes at any time.

This is useful for:

  • extended time accommodations

  • students finishing early

  • restarting paused students

View Student Exit Activity

Teachers can track when students leave the quiz by opening the heatmap and selecting the exclamation point (!) icon.

The activity log shows:

  • how many times a student exited the quiz

  • timestamps for each exit event

Hovering over the icon displays exact exit times.

Restart a Locked Quiz

If a student is locked out after leaving the quiz:

  1. Open the heatmap.

  2. Locate the student in quiz settings.

  3. Click Start next to their name.

This allows the student to re-enter the quiz and continue working.
