Create Your Own Problems in Magma Math

This article walks you through creating your own problems, adding images, and adjusting settings to control answer formats.

The Teacher-Created Problems tool allows you to build custom math problems, add images, and control how student answers are evaluated.

Create a New Problem

  1. Open the My Books tab.

  2. Click New Problem.

From there, you can begin building your custom problem.

Write Your Question

Type your question directly into the editor.

Magma automatically detects and formats math expressions as equations while you type. For advanced math notation, use the symbol palette on the right side of the editor. Select More to access additional symbols and formatting tools.

Add Images

You can add two types of images to your problem.

Problem Image

A Problem Image appears alongside the question prompt.

Use this for:

  • diagrams

  • graphs

  • visual references

  • word problem illustrations

Canvas Image

A Canvas Image appears inside the student answer area.

Students can draw, annotate, and interact directly on the image while solving the problem.

Set the Correct Answer

Enter the correct answer using:

  • your keyboard

  • the built-in math symbol tools

  • the numpad

Adjust Answer Validation Settings

You can control how student answers are evaluated using the following settings.

Require Format

Students must match the exact format of the correct answer.

Example:

  • 1/2 is different from 0.5

Require Simplification

Students must submit answers in simplest form.

Example:

  • 1/2 is accepted

  • 2/4 is not accepted

Preview Your Problem

Click Preview to see exactly how the problem will appear to students.

Previewing helps you:

  • check formatting

  • test math entry

  • review images and layout

  • verify answer settings

Create Different Question Types

Magma supports multiple question types, allowing you to build interactive problems that match your instructional goals. You can also tag problems to specific standards for easier organization and reporting.

Math Entry

Math Entry questions allow students to type and submit mathematical answers.

Students can:

  • type numbers and equations

  • use math symbols and expressions

  • submit fractions, decimals, variables, and more

Single Select

Single Select questions ask students to choose one correct answer from multiple options.

You can:

  • add up to 8 answer choices

  • include text or math expressions

  • mark the correct answer directly in the editor

Multi Select

Multi Select questions allow students to choose multiple correct answers.

Use this question type when:

  • more than one answer may be correct

  • students need to identify all valid options

  • you want to assess deeper understanding

You can add up to 8 answer choices using text, math, or both.

Ordered Questions

Ordered Questions ask students to arrange answers in the correct sequence.

The order you create will appear in numbered boxes, and students must rearrange the choices to match the correct order.

This is useful for:

  • sequencing steps

  • ordering values

  • organizing mathematical processes

Open Ended

Open Ended questions allow students to explain their thinking and show their work freely.

Students can:

  • write explanations

  • draw on the canvas

  • annotate images

  • demonstrate problem-solving strategies

This question type is ideal for:

  • reasoning tasks

  • mathematical discussions

  • showing conceptual understanding

Tagging Standards

You can tag problems to specific standards while creating or editing a question.

Standard tagging helps you:

  • organize custom content

  • align problems to curriculum goals

  • filter and track standards coverage more easily
