Student View in Practice Mode

Practice Mode is a space where students can build confidence and strengthen their math skills at their own pace. It provides helpful examples, instant feedback, and a familiar work environment so students can practice whenever they need extra support.

Students access Practice Mode from the Practice tab on their dashboard.

Getting started — Next Up

When students tap Start, Magma automatically selects skills they've struggled with in recent assignments and launches a practice session. Students don't need to choose a skill themselves — Magma picks based on their assignment performance.

Tracking progress — the pie chart

At the top of the Practice tab, students see a pie chart showing their overall skill progress within a domain. This reflects all of their work — both assignments and practice sessions. A student might already see progress in a standard without having used Practice Mode if they performed well in assignments.

Browsing by domain and standard

Students can browse content organized by domain and tap a standard to practice. Cards with a green checkmark indicate all skills in that standard have been achieved.

Teacher recommendations

If a teacher has recommended specific skills, they appear at the top of the selection list. Students can:

  1. Tap the recommended card

  2. Watch the example video

  3. Complete the practice set

  4. Earn stars to show their progress

During practice

Each skill includes a short instructional video and uses the same familiar canvas, drawing tools, and manipulatives from assignments. Students can retry a skill as many times as they'd like.

Earning stars

After completing a practice set, students receive a star rating:

  • 1 star: 50–69% correct

  • 2 stars: 70–89% correct

  • 3 stars: 90–100% correct

Students can move to the next skill once they earn at least 1 star, and can always return to improve.
