Smarter, Step-by-Step Hints with Lava

Lava now provides more interactive, personalized hints to support students as they work through math problems! Students can request a hint after making changes to their work, rather than waiting until they submit an answer. Hints are more direct, provide actionable next steps, and encourage students to show their mathematical thinking. Some hints now include a quick multiple-choice question with three answer options, helping students actively engage with the problem and check their understanding. Lava also uses clearer mathematical notation and student-friendly language to make guidance easier to follow.

Smarter Skill Progression in Practice Mode

Instead of moving students to an unrelated easier problem, Magma identifies the foundational skill needed to build understanding. Students can practice that prerequisite skill and then return to the original skill once they're ready.

Note: Teacher-recommended Practice activities continue to work as before.

Improved Assignment Organization for Students

Assignments are organized into Latest and Earlier sections, with completed assignments grouped together. This makes it easier for students to find recent assignments, keep track of their work, and navigate their assignment history.

Available on web and iPad.

Expanded Graphing Tools

New improvements include:

  • Support for graphing square root functions

  • Support for piecewise functions

  • The ability to display labels on points

These updates provide students with more flexibility when representing and exploring mathematical relationships. Available on web and iPad.

Open Number Line Improvements

The Open Number Line tool now includes an option to hide number labels with a single tap! This gives students more flexibility to explore number relationships, estimate values, and demonstrate their mathematical thinking without relying on prefilled numbers. Available on web and iPad.

Easier Image Uploads in Create Your Own Problems

Teachers can now drag and drop or copy and paste images directly into the problem editor. Images can be added as either a problem image or a canvas image, making custom problem creation faster and easier.

New Fact Fluency Diagnostic

Students now complete a short, one-time diagnostic when first accessing Fact Fluency. This identifies facts they already know and personalizes their practice to focus on skills that need improvement.

Updated Toolbox & New Math Tools

The student toolbox now features organized tabs, refreshed manipulatives, and an expanded workspace. New features include decimal fraction models, pattern blocks, additional graphing options, and open number lines. No setup required! All existing tools are still available, now organized into tabs.

New Remainders Answer Type

Students can now enter answers with remainders (e.g., 17 ÷ 5 = 3 r 2) using the r key or handwriting. Available on web and iPad for problems configured with the new Remainders answer type.

Improved Show Your Work Verification

When students submit a correct answer with minimal work or scribbles, Lava now prompts them to show their thinking before moving on. Students add more work and select Verify to continue. Automatically enabled for eligible Grade 3+ assignments with Show work and Allow hints turned on.
