Teacher Start Guide

Learn how to log in, access your classes, create assignments, and monitor student learning in Magma Math.

Logging In

To access Magma Math, go to:

Depending on your school or district setup, you may log in using:

  • Clever

  • ClassLink

  • Google

  • Microsoft

  • Schoology

  • Canvas

Accessing Your Classes

If your school uses:

  • Clever

  • ClassLink

  • Canvas

  • Schoology

Create a Class Manually

  1. Open the Classes tab.

  2. Click New Class + in the top-right corner.

  3. Enter:

    • class name

    • grade level

  4. Click Create.

Your class will automatically generate a class code students can use to join.

Create an Assignment

Assignments allow teachers to:

  • practice specific skills

  • assess understanding

  • differentiate instruction

  • monitor progress in real time

To create an assignment:

  1. Open the Assignments tab.

  2. Click New Assignment.

  3. Select problems by:

    • grade

    • book

    • chapter

    • standard

  4. Choose which classes, groups, or students will receive the assignment.

  5. Adjust assignment settings as needed.

  6. Name the assignment.

  7. Click Create.

Assignment Settings

Teachers can customize assignments using features such as:

  • Answer Checking → allows students to see feedback after incorrect answers

  • Quiz Mode → hides answers and feedback until the quiz ends

  • Safe Mode → tracks if students leave the assignment

  • Pacing → controls which problems students can access

  • Limited Attempts → limits how many tries students receive per problem

Assignments can also be edited later using the three-dot menu next to the assignment.

Monitor Student Learning with the Heatmap

The Heatmap provides a real-time overview of student performance during assignments and quizzes.

To open the Heatmap:

  • click anywhere on an assignment card

Teachers can use the Heatmap to:

  • monitor progress live

  • identify misconceptions

  • compare strategies

  • review student work

  • provide targeted support

Heatmap Colors and Icons

Color / Icon

🟩 Green

Correct on the first try

🟨 Yellow

Correct after multiple attempts

🟥 Red

Incorrect answer

👁 Eye icon

Student viewed the answer

⬜ Grey

No answer submitted yet

Number in cell

Number of submissions

Lava icon

Student used Lava hints

Review Student Work

From the Heatmap, teachers can:

  • click a problem number to compare all student responses

  • click a student name to review all assignment answers

  • open individual solutions to inspect work more closely

Teachers can also:

  • replay student work step-by-step

  • pin strong solutions for discussion

  • manually adjust scores

  • send direct feedback to students

Playback Student Thinking

Playback allows teachers to replay a student’s full solution process.

This helps teachers:

  • understand student reasoning

  • identify misconceptions

  • review problem-solving strategies

  • facilitate classroom discussions

Manage and Share Assignments

Using the three-dot menu next to an assignment, teachers can:

  • Edit

  • Archive

  • Delete

  • Copy

Collaborate with Colleagues

  • Share with colleagues

  • Organize into shared chapters

Support Instruction

  • Print assignments

  • Open Solve Mode

  • Change assignment topics

  • Share assignments with students

Additional Tools Teachers Use

Teachers can also use Magma Math to:

  • recommend skills in Practice Mode

  • monitor standards mastery in the Stats and Progress tabs

  • facilitate classroom discussions with Discussion Points

  • launch Live Activities

  • model thinking using the Launch Tab

  • review student portfolios and growth over time
