How to Set Up Your Classes in Magma

A step by step guide for Glasgow teachers to set up your classes for the new academic year.

Before you begin

Setting up your classes in Magma only takes a few minutes. This process creates your teaching classes for the current school year so you can start assigning work, track pupil progress and manage your classes in one place.

We've designed the setup process to give you full control over your class lists, as these often change from year to year. Rather than automatically carrying classes over, you decide which pupils belong in each class, helping ensure your data is accurate from the start.

The imported classes are temporary placeholder classes that help you locate your pupils. They are not the classes you'll teach from and will be archived in mid-September.

This means you'll need to create your own teaching classes and add your pupils into them.

1. Set Up Your Classes

All of your pupils have already been imported into your school.
Follow the steps below to create your classes and link your pupils.

Create Your Class

  1. Click ‘Classes’ in the bottom-right corner, just below your name.

  2. In the top-right corner, click the orange ‘New Class’ button.

  3. Give your class a name and select the correct year group.
    ​If it’s a mixed-year class, choose the highest year.

2 a. Add pupils to your class with the class code

  1. A white tile will appear with your new class name. Click anywhere on that tile to open it.

  2. Once you’re inside your class, you’ll see a 6-digit code next to the class name.
    This is your class code your pupils will need it to join your class.

  3. Pupils should log in to Magma Maths through the app on their device.

  4. They can click the Google or Microsoft buttons at the top of the login page.

  5. Once logged in, click on the pupil's name → join new class.

  6. Pupils enter the 6-digit class code to join your class.

2 b. Add pupils to your class and use QR codes to sign in

  1. Scroll down to the classes that are called "[Year group (1)]" and say From Import on the bottom of the tile. Follow the classes in the relevant year(s) for you.

    Please note: depending on the number of pupils in the year, you may need to follow more than one of these classes.

    It's a good idea to also follow any classes that say 'No Grade' or 'Other'. These classes contain pupils whose year group wasn't available when the data was imported, so we couldn't automatically place them into a specific year group.

  2. Go back to the class you've set up. Click the 'add pupil' button, and then 'add existing'. Select all the pupils from the list who are in your class and hit 'save'

    Don't worry! You're not moving pupils out of the imported classes. Those classes are simply there to help you find your pupils and will be archived automatically in mid-September.

    For example:

    Let's say you're teaching P1A, P1B and P1C

    1. Go to Classes and create:

      • P1A (Grade: P1)

      • P1B (Grade: P1)

      • P1C (Grade: P1)

    2. Next, follow the imported classes that contain your pupils. These might be named:

      • P1 (1)

      • P1 (2)

      • Other

      • No Grade

      Why "Other" and "No Grade"? These classes contain pupils whose year group wasn't available when the data was imported, so we couldn't automatically place them into a specific year group.

    3. Open P1A, then select:
      ​Add pupil → Add existing pupil

    4. You'll now see pupils from all of the imported classes you're following. You can:

      • search for pupils by name

      • select multiple pupils at once

      • add them to your class

    5. Repeat the process for P1B until all of your pupils are in the correct teaching class.

  3. Once all pupils have been added, click the 'print' button. You can then print out the pupils' QR codes.

Important: pupils need to open the Magma app and tap the Magma QR-code button to sign in using the QR code

4. Create an Assignment

Once your class is set up and your pupils are logged in, you’re ready to create your first assignment!

Assignments let you choose activities for your pupils to complete, track their progress, and see how they’re getting on.

To get started:

  • Go to your class.

  • Click ‘New Assignment’ in the top-right corner.

  • Choose your topic and set the dates.
