2026 October

An overview of the October 2026 product updates, featuring new features, improvements, and bug fixes.

Written by Vera Palm

Lava Hints, Step by Step 🌋

Lava now helps pupils step by step. Pupils can ask for a hint every time they change their work, not only after they have submitted an answer. Hints are more direct, and if a pupil hasn't shown their thinking yet, each hint gives them something to write. Some hints are now a quick multiple-choice question with three options, which keeps pupils thinking rather than just reading. Lava also uses the right maths symbols and simpler wording for the UK.

Practice Steps Down to the Skill Underneath 🧠

When a pupil doesn't succeed at a skill in Practice, they are now given the skill it builds on, rather than just an easier card from somewhere else. Once they solve it, they climb back up to the skill they missed. Teacher recommendations work as before.

Answer Division with Remainders ➗

Pupils can now answer division problems with a remainder, such as 17 ÷ 5 = 3 r 2, either typed or handwritten. The problem needs the new Remainders answer type for this to show. Available on web and iPad.

A Quick Placement Check for Fact Fluency 🎯

New pupils now complete a short placement check when they start Fact Fluency, so they begin at the right level for them. Available on web and iPad.

Numicons, Pattern Blocks and 3D Blocks 🧱

Even more tools have been added to the refreshed toolbox: Numicons, pattern blocks and 3D blocks. On the open number line, pupils can now hide the numbers with one tap, and graphs can show labels on points. Available on web and iPad.

Edit the Launch Tab ✍️

Teachers can now adapt the Launch tab of an assignment to suit their class. You can change the key vocabulary (the word, its definition and examples), remove cards and add new ones, with up to 4 words per assignment and 1–3 examples per word. You can also remove individual example problems and generate a new one at the same difficulty, with different numbers and context. Please note that edited content can't be reverted to the original.

See What's Answered Before Handing In a Quiz 📋

Before handing in a quiz, pupils now see a grid showing which problems they have answered and which are still blank, so nothing gets missed by accident. Available on web and iPad.

A Tidier Assignment List 🗂️

The pupils' assignment list is now split into Latest and Earlier, with completed assignments grouped together, making it easier for pupils to find what they need to work on. Available on web and iPad.

A British Voice for Read-Aloud 🇬🇧

Text-to-speech now uses a British voice for UK users, so numbers and words are read the way pupils are used to hearing them. Available on web.

District Book: Drag and Drop, Duplicate and Book Covers 📚

Organising the District Book is now much quicker. You can move folders, assignments and problems simply by dragging them, duplicate a book, folder, assignment or problem in one click, and add a cover image to each book so it's easy to recognise.

A New Filter on the District Dashboard 🔍

The District Dashboard has a new, more compact filter that takes up less space on screen, leaving more room to explore your data. Your selected filters now also stay applied when you move between views, so there's no need to set them again.

Follow-Up Assignments for UK Classes 🎯

Follow-up assignments are now available for UK classes, thanks to over 9,000 new problems added to the library. After an assignment, Magma can suggest follow-up work based on how your pupils did, so you can give practice where it's needed most. Follow-up assignments may not appear if the year group of the class differs from the year group the problems are taken from.

Shorter, Clearer Problems ✂️

Over 1,900 overly wordy problems in the England Yearbooks and Magma Core (Years 1 to 6) have been rewritten to be more concise and clear for pupils. They are updated automatically, so there is nothing you need to do.

Welsh Yearbooks Now Complete 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

The Welsh Yearbooks are now complete and match the new Curriculum for Wales, so teachers in Wales can find content aligned to the curriculum they are teaching.

Share with Specific Teachers 📤

Books, folders and assignments can now be shared with individual teachers, not just a whole grade, school or district. This suits teachers who work closely with particular colleagues and want to share only with them.

Problem Previews and Discussion Badges on the Heatmap 🎯

The heatmap now shows a preview of each problem, including what it is about and which standard it covers. Discussion badges also point out where a class discussion is worth having, so you can spot them straight from the heatmap.

Tell the AI How to Grade Open-Ended Problems 🤖

When creating your own open-ended problems, you can now add a prompt that describes how answers should be graded and set the maximum number of points. This gives you the evaluation you expect from the AI.

Reorder Your Content in My Drive 🔄

You can now drag and drop to reorder books, folders and problems in My Drive, and move problems between levels without opening edit mode on each one. This puts your content in the order and on the levels you want.

Smaller Improvements 🔧

  • The number pad now stays open between problems, so younger pupils who use it don't lose it.

  • Typing now goes straight into the answer box, even while the pen is selected.

  • To draw with the keyboard, pupils now hold the Space bar instead of Alt.

  • Correct answers using ∞, brackets, absolute value or fractional exponents typed on a keyboard are no longer marked wrong, and exponents now display correctly in choice buttons, spreadsheets and the answer box.

  • Open-ended grading is more reliable, so pupils' open-ended answers are no longer lost if grading fails.

  • Teacher solve mode now shows the same tools as pupils see.

  • If a pupil only makes dots on the board, they are now asked to show their working before they can move on.
