How to pair your Socket Mobile S740 barcode scanner with your iPad via Bluetooth, connect it to Meadow POS, and troubleshoot common connectivity issues.

Updated this week

Set Up Your Socket Scanner S740

The Socket Mobile S740 is a compact, wireless barcode scanner that connects to your iPad via Bluetooth. It reads both 1D and 2D barcodes and is ideal for fast, portable scanning at the point of sale.

Before You Start

  • Make sure your scanner is fully charged before setup.

  • Charging indicators: Red LED = charging, Green LED = fully charged.

  • Initial charge may take up to 8 hours.

Step 1: Set the Scanner to iOS Mode

  1. Turn on the scanner by pressing and holding the power button until the LED turns blue and it beeps twice.

  2. Scan the iOS Application Mode barcode below. The scanner will beep to confirm.

  • Select your scanner from the list of available devices (it will appear as "SocketScan S740" or similar).

Step 3: Connect to Meadow

  • Open the Meadow app.

  • Go to Menu → Manage Devices → Barcode Scanners.

  • Select your scanner from the list.

Step 4: Test It Out

  • Navigate to a search field in Meadow.

  • Scan a barcode — it should appear instantly in the field.

Troubleshooting

Scanner Won't Pair or Connect

  • Factory reset the scanner: Press and hold the scan button (trigger) AND the power button at the same time for 3 seconds until it beeps 3 times and shuts down.

  • On the iPad, go to Settings → Bluetooth, find the scanner, tap the (i) icon, and select "Forget This Device."

  • Turn the scanner back on and scan the iOS Application Mode barcode again (shown above).

  • Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then re-pair.

Scanner Paired but Not Scanning in Meadow

  • Make sure the scanner is selected in Menu → Manage Devices → Barcode Scanners.

  • Verify the scanner is in iOS Application Mode by scanning the iOS barcode above.

  • Try clicking in a search field first, then scan — the data should appear as text input.

Scanner Turns Off or Disconnects

  • Low battery: Charge the scanner fully. Red LED = charging, Green LED = charged.

  • Out of range: Stay within 30 feet of the iPad.

  • Multiple devices: Make sure no other iPads or devices are trying to connect to the same scanner.

Scanner LED Indicators

  • Red LED (solid): Charging in progress

  • Green LED (solid): Fully charged

  • Blue LED (blinking): Powered on and ready

  • 2 beeps + blue light: Successfully paired

  • 3 tones + shutdown: Factory reset completed

Switching Between iPad and PC Mode

If you need to use the scanner with a PC (for entering product barcodes in Meadow Admin), you'll need to switch modes:

  • For iPad (iOS): Scan the iOS Application Mode barcode above.

  • For PC: Unpair the scanner from all devices, then scan the HID Keyboard Mode barcode (see the general barcode scanner article).

Frequently Asked Questions

My Socket scanner keeps scanning barcodes twice. How do I fix the double scanning?

This is usually caused by the scanner being in the wrong mode or having a sensitivity issue. Try factory resetting the scanner (hold trigger + power button for 3 seconds), then re-scan the iOS Application Mode barcode. If it persists, check the Socket Mobile Companion app for scan delay settings.

How do I keep my Socket scanner on all the time without pressing the button each time?

The S740 has a power-saving mode that turns it off after inactivity. You can adjust the auto-off timer using the Socket Mobile Companion or ScannerSettings app from the App Store. Some settings can also be changed using command barcodes from the Command Barcodes Reference Sheet.

My scanner is connected to the iPad via Bluetooth but Meadow doesn't see it. What's wrong?

Go to Menu → Manage Devices → Barcode Scanners in Meadow and select your scanner. If it doesn't appear, the scanner may not be in iOS Application Mode. Scan the iOS Application Mode barcode above, then check Manage Devices again.

How do I pair the Socket scanner to help with Member Check-in scanning?

The setup is the same — scan the iOS Application Mode barcode, pair via Bluetooth, and select the scanner in Manage Devices. It will work for any scanning function in Meadow, including member check-in.

Can I use the Socket S740 to scan Metrc tags?

Yes, the S740 reads both 1D and 2D barcodes, which includes Metrc UID barcodes. For best results, use Meadow's label printing to create scannable Metrc labels.
