Why isn't my receipt printer or cash drawer working?

Receipt printers pair with an iPad using Bluetooth. If you encounter a problem try these steps to get everything working.

Updated over a week ago

Receipt Printer

  • First, make sure Bluetooth is turned on in the iPad's settings

  • To pair the printer, hold down the small red "Pair" button on the back of the printer for 6-7 seconds. The light will blink, indicating it is ready to pair.

  • Find and select the receipt printer (Star Micronics) in the list of Bluetooth devices in the iPad's settings.

Your receipt printer should now be paired. Each time you turn on the iPad in the future, it should automatically pair with that printer.

  • Receipt printers can only be paired with one iPad at a time.

  • Each iPad can only work successfully with one receipt printer at a time.

If the receipt printer is not automatically pairing with the iPad after the first pairing, the printers "auto connection" setting may be turned off. To turn on the printer's Auto Connection setting:

  • Use a pen to hold down the red reset ("RST") button on the back of the printer for a few seconds.

  • The printer will reset and will print a note that tells you if auto connect is on.

Cash Drawer

  • Make sure the cash drawer cable is securely connected to the jack on the bottom of the drawer on one end and the back of the receipt printer on the other. Be aware, the two ends of the cable have different size plugs.

  • The cable's small plug (the size of a phone jack) connects into the back of the receipt printer. The large plug connects to the underside of the cash drawer.

  • Make sure that the iPad is successfully paired with the receipt printer using Bluetooth.

Still experiencing problems?

  • Bluetooth can be a bit tricky sometimes. Make sure you have unpaired any other iPads that may be competing with each other to connect to the printer. Go into the Bluetooth settings of any iPad you have connected to the printer in the past, click the (i) icon to the right of "Star Micronics," and select "Forget this Device." Now reset Bluetooth and pair the iPad you want to use with the printer.

  • Star Micronics also makes an app you can download from the App Store. Search for Star Setting Utility.

  • You can use this app to turn on/off the drawer auto-open after a transaction.
