How to connect your Microsoft Account to Mercator.ai

How to set up Microsoft SSO with Mercator AI and fix common login issues.

Updated over a month ago

NOTE: Your organization MUST have setup Microsoft Account with Mercator.ai ahead of the users signing up or connect Microsoft Accounts to their Mercator.ai account. Please connect with your IT Administrator (Instructions for IT Admin) and email support@mercator.ai with subject "Request to Enable Microsoft SSO".

How to Create a new account with Microsoft

  1. Accept your Mercator AI invite via email

  2. Click "Join Now" button from the invite email.

  3. On the "Create Your Account" Page, click “Sign up with Microsoft”.

  4. A window will popup. Sign into your Microsoft account. NOTE: the Microsoft account email MUST match the Mercator AI Account email.

How to connect your existing Mercator.ai account to a Microsoft Account

  1. Log into Mercator.ai with your existing password.

  2. Navigate to Account Settings > Account Settings

  3. Under "Connect Your Account", click the “Sign in with Microsoft” button.

  4. A window will popup. Sign into your Microsoft account. NOTE: the Microsoft account email MUST match the Mercator.ai Account email. (See Instructions for IT Administrators)

How to complete the Microsoft process

The Microsoft SSO popup has been prompted. There are different experiences depending on what the user’s current Microsoft logged in state.

If you "Need admin approval"

This means your organization must set up Microsoft SSO before you can log in.

If you are not logged in to any Microsoft accounts

  • The Microsoft pop-up will ask you to log in with your username/password.

  • You must log in to the same email as the Mercator AI invite.

If you're logged into multiple Microsoft Accounts

  • The Microsoft pop-up will show a list of logged-in Microsoft accounts

  • You must select the Microsoft account with the same email as the Mercator AI invite.

  • If the the Microsoft account with the same email as MercatorAI invite is not on the list, select “(+) Use another account” and follow the username/password flow as above.

If you're logged into a single Microsoft Account

  • The Microsoft pop-up will pop-up and, within seconds, close.

  • Microsoft effectively auto-selects the single logged-in Microsoft account.

  • This can cause problems and is addressed here.

If you're asked to grant Mercator AI individual permission

  • The pop-up will ask to grant Mercator AI permission to read the user’s profile.

  • Mercator AI uses this permission to get the email address of the user. The email is used to match it against our application invite emails and to send emails for Saved Searches.

  • Click the Accept button and grant the permission.

  • The popup will close and the user will be forwarded into the Mercator AI (logged in)

Troubleshooting Errors

Issue: The Microsoft window opened briefly, then disappeared, and I was not able to log in.

What's happening: The Microsoft popup window auto-selects the wrong Microsoft Account

  • If the Microsoft SSO popup and closes due to having only one Microsoft logged in account and Mercator AI returns with a mismatched email error, it is because the currently logged in Microsoft account is NOT the email we have for the MercatorAI account.

  • Mercator AI cannot get Microsoft to let us choose a different account or use the Microsoft username/password flow.

How to fix this scenario

Before triggering Microsoft SSO again, make sure you’ve completed one of these steps.

Option 1 : Log out of your Microsoft account

  1. Log out of your current Microsoft account by going to https://account.microsoft.com and click Sign out.

  2. Sign into Mercator AI with Microsoft and follow steps for if you are not logged into any accounts

Option 2: Add another account

  1. Log in to the correct Microsoft account by going https://account.microsoft.com and select “Sign in with a different account”. Log in with the matching Mercator AI invited email.

Issue: I cannot create my account with Microsoft SSO from the sign in page

What's happening: All users MUST complete their Mercator AI account through the invite email process.

  • If you try to log into Mercator AI via the login in page WITHOUT accepting an invite, you'll see an error indicating that the user needs to check their email and accept the invite.

How to fix this scenario

  • Check your inbox for the invite email with the subject line "You've been invited to Mercator.ai" and follow the steps to complete your account.

  • This will ensure your account is connected to your Microsoft account correctly.

Issue: When I try to sign into Microsoft, it says "You can't sign in here with a personal account. Use your work or school account instead"

What's happening: Unlikely to happen, but this means the organization is NOT on an enterprise version of Microsoft workspace. Microsoft SSO blocks non-enterprise accounts from using the username/password flow in the Microsoft SSO popup.

How to fix this scenario

  1. Log into the matching Microsoft account before logging into Mercator.ai by going https://account.microsoft.com and select “Sign in with a different account” or sign up with the correct invited Mercator.ai account.

  2. When asked to "Stay signed in?", Click Yes

  3. Then log into app.mercator.ai with Microsoft and select that account

  4. If you still can’t log in

    • Repeat steps 1–2 in a different browser (e.g., Safari or Chrome).

Issue: I get the error message "This Microsoft account isn’t supported for Single Sign-On."

What's happening: Microsoft lets you create an account using any email address even if that email isn’t hosted by Microsoft. For example, you can use it to sign in to Microsoft Word 365. However, Microsoft won’t allow that type of account to be used for Single Sign-On (SSO). Since Microsoft doesn’t manage the underlying email, it can’t verify that you actually control the address — so it won’t extend trust to other apps through Microsoft SSO.

How to fix this scenario

  • There is no workaround and considered a security measure for Microsoft.

  • You must use an email/password to sign in.
