Understanding Our Controlled Medication Policy

Important guidelines for patients receiving controlled medications at MindDemand, including refill policies, appointment requirements, and monitoring expectations.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

If you are prescribed a controlled medication through MindDemand (such as stimulants or other regulated substances), there are specific policies in place to ensure your safety and the responsible management of your treatment. These guidelines are standard practice in psychiatric care and exist to protect you.

Controlled Medication Agreement

Before a controlled medication can be prescribed, every patient is required to sign a Controlled Medication Agreement. This is completed digitally during your intake process alongside other consent forms.

This agreement outlines your responsibilities as a patient, including:

  • Taking medications exactly as prescribed

  • Attending all required follow-up appointments

  • Participating in any monitoring your provider requests

  • Avoiding misuse of the medication

No controlled medication will be prescribed without a signed agreement on file.

Appointment Requirements

Regular follow-up appointments are required for patients on controlled medications. These visits allow your provider to check how the medication is working, monitor for side effects, and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

Important: If you miss a required follow-up appointment, your controlled medication will be paused until you are seen by your provider. To continue your medication, please contact us to schedule your next visit.

Refill Policy

Controlled medications follow a strict refill schedule based on your prescribed dosage and appointment timeline.

Early refills are not approved. Patients are expected to take their medication on the prescribed schedule. In rare cases, your provider may review an early refill request, but approval is not guaranteed.

If you need a refill, the first step is always to make sure you are up to date on your follow-up appointments. Your provider can authorize refills during or after your scheduled visit.

Lost or Stolen Medication

Controlled medications that are reported lost or stolen cannot be replaced. This is a firm policy due to federal regulations governing these medications.

If this situation occurs, your provider can review your case at your next scheduled appointment, but replacement is not guaranteed. Please store your medication in a safe, secure location.

Monitoring and Safety

To ensure safe prescribing, your provider may use standard monitoring tools as part of your treatment. These are not punitive and are standard practice for controlled substances.

Monitoring may include:

  • Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) checks

  • Urine drug screening

  • Pill counts

  • Pharmacy verification

These measures protect both you and your provider and help ensure that your treatment remains safe and effective.

Provider Oversight

All decisions regarding controlled medications are made by your provider based on clinical judgment. Your provider may adjust, change, or discontinue a medication if:

  • A safety concern arises

  • Treatment guidelines are not being followed

  • Monitoring requirements are not met

  • The medication is no longer clinically appropriate

These decisions are always made with your health and safety as the priority.
