How to Download and Translate Content

Download your lesson videos from Google Drive so you can upload them to ScreenPal and add captions.

Written by Lisa Doty

This process works in two parts. First, download your video file from Google Drive. Then upload it to ScreenPal to add captions.

Note: Video hosting may vary based on your school or district. This article is only for Hub users who see “Example Video File” links to Google Drive.

How to access your video files:

Open Resource Hub lesson or topic and locate the video.

Part 1: In the Resource Hub

  • Locate and click the video file you want to caption. The video will open in a Google Drive tab by default.

  • Click the Download icon on the far left side of the toolbar. Google Drive will convert and prepare the file, then save it to your computer's default downloads location.

  • Once the download finishes, confirm the file appears in your Downloads folder (or wherever your browser saves downloads) and note its file name — you'll need to select it again in Part 2.

Part 2: In ScreenPal

  • Access the Modern Classroom premium ScreenPal account. Sign up here for screencasting, editing, question embedding, AI captions and translation, and more

  • Open ScreenPal.

  • Select + Create menu, then Upload Content) from your ScreenPal dashboard.

  • Click “Upload,” then select the video file you downloaded in Part 1. Or, drag and drop the video file to the screen.

  • Once the upload finishes, select “ScreenPal AI - Generate” from the video settings menu.

  • Captions will generate and populate under the “Timeline” header. Review and edit the generated captions for accuracy before publishing.

  • You may also use the dropdown menu to the right of the Video Settings header to select from language options.

  • Save any changes to the captions.

Sharing the Captioned Video

Videos can be shared via a direct ScreenPal link. Alternatively, click the Share button to select other options, including posting to Google Classroom.

Troubleshooting:

Download button is grayed out or missing?

  • Resource Hub videos are viewable by its users and should be downloadable. If you find that you cannot access the video, please contact hub@modernclassrooms.org.

Downloaded file won't upload to ScreenPal?

  • Confirm the file is in a supported video format (such as MP4 or MOV). If Google Drive downloaded it as a different format, try re-exporting or converting the file before uploading.

Auto-generated captions are inaccurate?

  • This is common with subject-specific vocabulary. Review the caption track line by line in ScreenPal's caption editor and correct any errors before publishing. Save any changes you make to the edits.
