FAQ: How can I optimize my shipments for placement discounts? (RA/OA/wholesale sellers)

In 2024, Amazon created a new rule for FBA sellers called the "Five Identical Box" Rule. This article shows you how AccelerList customers can easily build these optimized split shipments.

Updated this week

You can see updates to Amazon's placement fee policy here. If you frequently restock a small number of SKUs, this is one way that you can improve your margins a little bit by saving on Amazon's dreaded FBA placement fees.

The game is this: If you're willing to break your shipment down into five identical shipments, each going to a different fulfillment center, Amazon will waive the placement fees for that batch. This article by Carbon6 does a good job of breaking down how that plays out in practice.

Fortunately, AccelerList makes this easy. Here's a walkthrough on how to take advantage of the placement fee discount.

Step 1: Plan Your Shipment

The first thing you'll need to do is some planning. How do you plan to split up your box? Determine exactly the quantity for each SKU that you would like to send into Amazon, and make sure that you can send in 5+ shipments of the exact same box.

Step 2: Use the API Method for Box Contents

Before you submit box contents information, make sure that you selected API for box contents method. Here's a guide on how to configure that setting.

You MUST use API method (2D barcodes won't work) because Amazon's API needs the packing information up-front, otherwise, Amazon won't know to offer the discount.

Step 3: Create & Build Your First Box

Create your first box

Now that you've created a box, click on it and start a packing the first box.

Add the contents and label your products:

Click on the weights to edit inline:

Awesome, now everything should be configured for one single box.

Step 4: Duplicate The Box

Now, just click the duplicate box button below:

Once you've clicked it five times, your configuration should look something like this:

Step 5: View Placement

Once you're done, click Continue to move on to the next step. At the Placement step, when you Generate Placement Options, you should see the 5-way split shipment option.

Now just click Get Transport Options, and once it's done loading, you'll see the options for each split shipment. Please give it 5-10 minutes, this part takes a while with multiple shipments.

If you don't see the AP - UPS option, just click Regenerate Options:

This may take a few tries. As of October 2025, I noticed Amazon's API intermittently returns no Amazon-Partnered carrier options. Trying to Regenerate options, while annoying, often solves this.
