If you're considering a private hospital room for added comfort and privacy during a hospital stay, you may be wondering if the cost is eligible under your Health Spending Account (HSA). The good news is that hospital private room fees are eligible under your HSA, provided they are medically necessary and prescribed by a healthcare practitioner.

Eligibility Requirements

To ensure that your private room fees are eligible for reimbursement, the following criteria must be met:r

  • The hospital must provide an itemized invoice that includes:

    • The name of the patient

    • The date(s) of hospitalization

    • A clear breakdown of private room charges

    • Proof of payment

What Types of Hospital Rooms Are Covered?

Generally, the following types of hospital rooms may be eligible under your HSA:

  • Private Rooms: A room with a single bed, providing privacy and additional comfort.

  • Semi-Private Rooms: A room shared with one other patient, often with enhanced amenities.

Are There Any Restrictions?

While private room fees are eligible, there are a few important considerations:

  • Additional amenities such as upgraded meals, television, or guest accommodations are generally not eligible.

  • Hospital Parking is not eligible
