At myHSA, we understand that our members often seek ways to enhance their health and well-being in a preventative way, rather than reacting to health events that come up.

Private health memberships offer a comprehensive solution for those who prefer this approach to managing their healthcare needs. These memberships provide access to a range of services like annual health assessments, medical consultations, and personalized wellness programs—all in one package.

Some well-known providers of these services include MEDCAN, Copeman, Truelife MD, Mayo Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic. The good news? You can usually claim these memberships using your Health Spending Account (HSA)

How Do Private Health Memberships Work with HSAs and METC?

We frequently get asked about how these memberships are treated under the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC) guidelines and whether they are eligible for reimbursement through your HSA. The answer largely depends on the services included in the membership.

Most of these memberships are paid for with a block fee that covers the entire year. As long as the services within the package (such as assessments, consultations, and treatments) are eligible under the METC, the membership fee is also eligible for reimbursement through your HSA.

This means that the services must be provided by an eligible health practitioner (Doctor, Nurse, or other practitioner) from this list:

It also means that the services cannot be purely cosmetic, they must have a medical reason that you are obtaining them. For anything that could be considered cosmetic that your membership includes, we would need a letter from the practitioner stating it is medically necessary. Here's more on what that looks like:

What We Need from You

To ensure that your private health membership is eligible, we require a receipt that outlines the specific package you're enrolling in. This receipt must detail the services included, so we can confirm that all services meet the criteria outlined by the METC. Once we have this documentation, you’re good to go for claiming the membership fee! See a sample of this attached to this article!

Submitting Your Claim

When you're ready to submit your claim, ensure you categorize it correctly within your account. Here's how to do it:
