If you or your dependant has been prescribed Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT), you may be wondering whether your myHSA plan can help cover the cost. In most cases it can! Here's what you need to know.
What Is Testosterone Replacement Therapy?
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a medically prescribed treatment for individuals with clinically low testosterone levels. It may be prescribed to address symptoms such as:
• Fatigue and low energy
• Reduced muscle mass and strength
• Low libido or sexual dysfunction
• Mood changes, depression, or difficulty concentrating
• Bone density loss
TRT can be administered in several forms, including injections, topical gels or creams, patches, and oral medications.
Is TRT an Eligible HSA Expense?
When prescribed by a licensed healthcare professional and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy, TRT medications are eligible for reimbursement under an HSA.
To be eligible under the CRA guidelines for prescription medications, your TRT prescription claim must meet the following criteria:
Must be prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional (e.g., a physician or nurse)
Must be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy
Must be accompanied by an Official Prescription Receipt from the pharmacy.
As long as the above requirements are met, TRT is treated like any other prescription medication under your myHSA account and is eligible fore reimbursement.
What About Related Costs?
Beyond the medication itself, other costs associated with your TRT treatment may also be eligible through your myHSA plan:
Doctor or specialist consultations to diagnose testosterone deficiency or monitor your treatment.
Lab testing such as blood work to measure hormone levels (when ordered by an eligible practitioner such as a physician or nurse).
Follow-up appointments related to managing your TRT treatment plan
These expenses are generally eligible under your myHSA when accompanied by an official service receipt.
