Health Spending Accounts (HSAs) are valuable tools for individuals looking to save for medical expenses while enjoying tax benefits. Under the guidelines set forth by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), HSAs offer coverage for prescription drugs, provided they meet specific criteria. If you're utilizing an HSA for your healthcare needs, it's essential to understand these guidelines to ensure your prescriptions are eligible for coverage.

Key Guidelines for Prescription Drug Coverage:

  1. Prescription Requirement: Prescription drugs eligible for coverage under an HSA must be prescribed by a qualified healthcare professional. This requirement ensures that the medications are deemed necessary for the treatment of a medical condition and are not obtained for recreational or non-medical purposes.

  2. Dispensing by a Pharmacy: To qualify for coverage, prescription drugs must be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy. This ensures that the medications are obtained through legitimate channels and meet the necessary quality and safety standards. Purchasing prescription drugs from unauthorized sources, such as online vendors without proper accreditation, may render them ineligible for HSA coverage.

  3. Official Prescription Receipt: Alongside the prescription drug, individuals must obtain an Official Prescription Receipt from the pharmacy. This receipt serves as documentation of the transaction and includes essential details such as the pharmacist's name, credentials, the name of the prescribed medication, dosage information, and the date of dispensation. The Official Prescription Receipt acts as proof that the prescription was obtained from a legitimate source and is eligible for reimbursement through the HSA. Here is what the Official Prescription Receipt might look like:

When picking up prescription medications from a pharmacy, individuals should request an Official Prescription Receipt along with the medication.

Please note that over-the-counter medications and vitamins/supplements are not eligible.
