Understanding which dental procedures are typically eligible under an HSA can help individuals make informed decisions before they book the appointment, that way they know for sure they will be reimbursed for their dental services!

In this article, I'll delve into the various dental procedures that are covered by an HSA, the reimbursement process, and important considerations to keep in mind.

**While this article provides general information about Health Spending Accounts and eligible dental procedures, it's crucial to remember that coverage can vary depending on your specific plan. Always verify that your plan includes these expenses before assuming eligibility.**

Eligible Dental Procedures:

  1. Preventive Care:

    • Dental Exams: Routine dental exams by a dentist or hygienist are typically covered under a Health Spending Account. These exams help assess oral health and detect any issues early on.

    • Dental Cleanings (Hygienist): Professional dental cleanings performed by a dental hygienist are eligible expenses under HSAs.

    • X-Rays: Diagnostic X-rays, such as bitewing or panoramic X-rays, are typically covered. These images help dentists diagnose problems that may not be visible during a visual exam.

    • Gum Treatments: Certain gum treatments, such as scaling and root planing for periodontal disease, are eligible under an HSA.

    • Botox Injections (if being used therapeutically to treat TMJ, Migraines, or other chronic issues may be eligible. These require a prescription stating that they are medically necessary, and what they are treating!)

  2. Restorative Procedures:

    • Fillings: Restorative fillings to repair cavities and restore the structure of damaged teeth are eligible.

    • Root Canals: Endodontic treatments, including root canals, to save infected or damaged teeth are covered.

    • Tooth Extractions: Surgical or simple tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth removal, are eligible expenses.

    • Cavities: Treatment for cavities, such as dental fillings or crowns, falls under eligible expenses.

  3. Prosthetic Devices:

    • Dentures: Both the repair and replacement of dentures are covered under an HSA.

    • Bridges: Dental bridges, used to replace missing teeth, are typically eligible expenses.

    • Implants: Dental implants, including the surgical placement of the implant or veneer(s) and the restoration (crown) that attaches to it, are covered.

  4. Major Dental Procedures:

    • Crowns: Dental crowns, used to restore the shape, size, and strength of a tooth, are eligible.

    • Oral Surgery: Certain oral surgery procedures, such as gum surgery or tooth extraction for orthodontic purposes, are covered.

    • Emergency Dental Procedures that are non-cosmetic are eligible

  5. Orthodontic Treatments:

    • Braces: Traditional braces, as well as clear aligner systems like Invisalign, are eligible expenses.

    • Retainers: Both fixed and removable retainers prescribed after orthodontic treatment are typically covered.

    • Orthodontist Consultations: Consultations with orthodontists for treatment planning are generally eligible.

    • Appliances (night guards etc) are eligible as long as they are custom fitted for you by a dentist and not over-the-counter

Non-Eligible Procedures: While a Health Spending Account can cover a wide range of dental treatments, it's important to note that purely cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening, are not eligible for reimbursement.

Reimbursement Process: Unlike traditional insurance plans, myHSA operates on a reimbursement model where individuals pay for eligible services upfront and then submit receipts for reimbursement. Typically, the turnaround time for reimbursement is quick, ranging from 1 to 3 days. For this reason, you will not find a policy number or direct billing information, nor will we require an estimate before a procedure takes place. Please note that we always require an official Service Receipt showing what was done in the appointment. Attached is a sample of what that looks like!
