Introduction of the "Hunting Equipment (Firearms, bows, etc.) and Licenses (taxable)" Category

In recent years, myHSA has implemented a specific category called "Hunting Equipment (Firearms, bows, etc.) and Licenses (taxable)" for items like firearms, bows, and other hunting-related weapons. This change ensures that these items are no longer grouped under the general "Sporting Goods" category.

Why the Change?

The reclassification to "Hunting Equipment (Firearms, bows, etc.) and Licenses (taxable)" was driven by many Plan Administrators who do not consider firearms and hunting weapons to be typical sporting goods. They wanted to exercise more control over the ability to use WSAs for these purchases, reflecting their unique nature and the specific oversight required.

What Is Included?

  • Hunting Weapons and Licenses: Firearms, bows, crossbows, and hunting licenses now fall under the "Hunting Equipment (Firearms, bows, etc.) and Licenses (taxable)" category.

What Remains Under "Sporting Goods"?

  • Peripheral Hunting Items: Items that are related to hunting but are not weapons, such as hiking boots, water bottles etc. are still eligible under the "Sporting Goods" category.

  • Fishing Gear: Fishing equipment continues to be classified as sporting goods and has not been moved to a separate category.

In summary, while firearms, bows, and hunting licenses are eligible under your WSA, they are now specifically categorized under "Hunting Equipment (Firearms, bows, etc.) and Licenses (taxable)." Peripheral items related to hunting and fishing gear remain under "Sporting Goods," providing a clear understanding of what items can be claimed.
