At myHSA, we know that taking care of your health is a top priority. That’s why we’re here to help you understand how your Health Spending Account (HSA) and Wellness Spending Account (WSA) can cover those all-important preventative health screenings.

Why Preventative Health Screenings Matter

First things first, let’s talk about why these screenings are so crucial. Preventative health screenings can catch potential health issues early, making them easier and cheaper to treat. Plus, staying on top of your health means fewer surprises (not the fun kind) down the road.

What’s Covered?

HSAs and WSAs have got you covered for a variety of preventative screenings. Here are some key examples:

  • Annual Physical Exams: Think of this as your health’s yearly check-up. It’s a comprehensive review of your overall well-being, usually including blood pressure checks, cholesterol levels, and other routine tests. These are typically eligible under your HSA plan.

  • Mammograms: This important screening helps detect breast cancer early. It’s recommended annually or every two years for women over 40, or earlier if you have a family history of breast cancer. Good news – it’s covered by an HSA!

  • Colonoscopies: Not the most fun, but definitely important! This screening checks for colorectal cancer and is recommended every ten years starting at age 50, or earlier for those with a family history of colorectal cancer. And yes, it’s covered too.

  • Vision Check-Ups: Regular eye exams can catch vision problems and eye diseases early. Whether you need glasses, contact lenses, or just a routine check-up, these are often covered under your HSA.

  • Dental Check-Ups: Keeping your teeth and gums healthy is key to overall health. Regular dental cleanings, exams, and x-rays can prevent more serious dental issues down the line. These are HSA Eligible!

  • Blood Pressure Screenings: High blood pressure can lead to serious health issues if left unchecked. Regular screenings can help you keep it under control and are usually eligible for reimbursement.

  • Cholesterol Tests: Regular cholesterol tests can help manage your risk for heart disease. These screenings are essential and covered if requested by a medical practitioner!

  • Vaccinations: Staying up to date on vaccines can prevent a range of illnesses. From flu shots to more specific vaccines, these are HSA eligible.

  • Mental Health Screenings: Taking care of your mental health is just as important as physical health. Screenings for anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions can help you get the support you need early on. These services are often covered under your HSA.

  • Counseling and Therapy: Regular sessions with a licensed counselor or therapist can help manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. These sessions are usually eligible for reimbursement.

  • Stress Management Programs: Programs designed to help you manage stress through techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation exercises can sometimes be covered under your WSA.

  • Gym and Fitness Club Memberships: They often get a back seat, but having a fitness routine or moving your body can prevent all kinds of disease or issues down the line. These may be eligible on your WSA.
