If you’ve perused the list of eligible expenses under your myHSA account, we’re sure you’ve notice a subcategory listed under quite a few of the main categories named “Multiple Allowable Expenses”.

So what is this subcategory? The people want to know...and we’re here to break it down for everyone!

Main Category VS Subcategory — Why Do We Have Them?

Our list of eligible HSA expenses is comprised of Main Categories and Subcategories. Within the realm of medical expenses there are often practitioners or certain branches of specialized healthcare that can offer more than one type of service.

Let’s use both our Dental and Vision categories as an example. Both Dental and Optical Care practitioners often offer a very wide range of services. A lot of Dentists offer services other than semi annual cleanings and X-Rays, some also offer Orthodontic services, Major Restorative Procedures, and even Oral Surgery, to name a few. The same can be said for Optometrists and Opthamologists, who often offer services beyond providing prescriptive lenses, some also offer such services as Laser eye surgery.

Having subcategories allows our adjudication team to properly assess your invoices based on the services rendered by certain medical professionals, but what happens when you’ve undergone more than one procedure, and each has it’s own subcategory?

Claiming More Than One Main Category Expense

This is where our “Multiple Allowable Expenses” category comes in! This category allows you to claim multiple services under the same main category all in one claim, so long as all expenses have taken place in the same benefit year, and are for the same patient. Up to 10 attachments can be added to claims submitted under this subcategory, unlike other subcategories with a max attachment amount of only 5 per one claim.

Which Main Categories Offer This as a Subcategory?

The main categories that offer this as an option are as follows:

  • Dental

  • Vision

  • Professional Service
