How to Generate Return Labels Automatically at the Packing Station

Learn how to configure your carrier settings to print a return label alongside your outbound shipping label automatically.

Updated this week

To speed up your fulfillment process, you can now generate and print return labels at the same time as your outbound shipping labels. This allows your packing team to include return documentation inside the box in one seamless step.

Supported Carriers

This feature is currently available for:

  • UPS

  • FedEx

  • Stamps.com

  • Easypost

How to Enable Automated Return Labels

  1. Navigate to Carrier Setup and select one of the supported carriers.

  2. Click on the Advanced tab.

  3. Locate the new Return Label Settings section.

  4. Switch the toggle "Generate Return Label with shipping label" to ON.

Required Configuration

When this toggle is enabled, the system requires two default data points to ensure the return label can be generated even if the order details are missing return info:

  • Default Shipment Method: The fallback shipping service used for the return (e.g., Ground, First Class)

  • Default Return Address: The destination address where the package should be returned.

How the System Chooses Return Details

To prevent errors during the automated printing process, the system follows a specific hierarchy to determine which carrier and address to use:

1. The "Carrier Setup" Rule

The system follows the rules of the Carrier Setup where you enabled the toggle.

  • Cross-Setup Scenario: If you have two UPS accounts (Setup A and Setup B) and only Setup A has the toggle ON, the return label will always be generated via Setup A, even if the original shipping label came from Setup B.

  • Carrier Override: If your order specifies a different return carrier (e.g., FedEx) but you have enabled the auto-return toggle on your UPS setup, the system will generate a UPS return label with the default return shipment method that is defined on UPS carrier setup.

2. The "Data Fallback" Rule

The system prioritizes order-specific data but uses your configuration as a safety net:

  • Priority 1: Return Address and Method defined on the specific Shipment Order.

  • Priority 2 (Fallback): If the order fields are empty, the system uses the Default Shipment Method and Default Return Address you entered in the Carrier Setup.

โš ๏ธ Important Workflow Details

  • Packing Station Only: This automation currently functions exclusively at the Packing Station. It will not trigger for labels generated through create label or other screens.

  • Two-Request Process: When enabled, the system sends two separate requests to the carrier (one for the outbound label and one for the return).

  • Processing Time: You may notice a very slight increase in printing time, as the system must wait for the carrier to return both labels before they are sent to your printer.
