What should I do if the Nearo app won't download or install?

Step-by-step help for Windows and Mac users who have trouble downloading or installing the Nearo desktop app.

Updated this week

If you are having trouble downloading or installing the Nearo desktop app, the steps below can help you resolve the most common issues on Windows and Mac.

Windows: app is blocked by SmartScreen or Smart App Control

You may see a blue screen saying "Windows protected your PC", a message that the app is unrecognised or unsafe, or the app may close immediately after opening.

To get past the SmartScreen blue screen:

  • Click More info on the blue screen.

  • A Run anyway button will appear at the bottom β€” click it to continue.

  • If that does not work, right-click the installer file and select Run as administrator.

If Smart App Control is blocking the app:

  • Open Settings by clicking the Start menu and selecting Settings, or by pressing Windows + I on your keyboard.

  • Click in the search bar at the top of the Settings window and type Smart App Control.

  • Select Smart App Control settings from the results.

  • Set Smart App Control to Evaluation or Off.

  • Restart your computer if prompted, then try installing again.

πŸ”” Only proceed if you downloaded the app from the official Nearo website. If your computer is managed by a school or organisation, check with your IT administrator before changing Smart App Control settings.

Windows: download is blocked or flagged

Your download may fail or disappear, your browser may show a warning that the file is unsafe, or your antivirus software may quarantine the file.

  • In your browser, look for an option to Allow or Keep the file and select it.

  • If your antivirus software blocked the download, temporarily pause it and try downloading again.

  • If the issue continues, try a different browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.

πŸ’‘ Remember to turn your antivirus protection back on after the app is installed.

Windows: installation fails or won't start

The installer may appear to do nothing when you open it, or an error may appear part way through the installation.

  • Right-click the installer file and select Run as administrator.

  • Check that the file downloaded completely β€” a partial download will not install correctly. Delete the file and download it again if you are not sure.

  • Restart your computer and try running the installer again.

  • Confirm that your version of Windows meets Nearo's system requirements.

macOS: app won't open because it's from an unidentified developer

You may see a message saying "App can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer", or the app icon may appear but not respond when you click it.

  • Right-click (or Control-click) the Nearo app icon and select Open.

  • In the dialog that appears, click Open again to confirm.

  • If that does not work, open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security, and look for a message about Nearo near the bottom of the page. Click Open Anyway.

πŸ”” Only open apps you downloaded from a source you trust.

macOS: download is blocked or incomplete

The file may not download at all, or the installer may appear corrupted or refuse to open.

  • Make sure your internet connection is stable and try downloading again.

  • Try using a different browser.

  • If a partial download already exists in your Downloads folder, delete it before trying again.

macOS: app won't install or run

The app may open briefly and then close on its own, or you may see a compatibility error.

  • Confirm that your macOS version meets Nearo's system requirements.

  • Make sure you have moved the Nearo app into your Applications folder before opening it.

  • Restart your computer and try opening the app again.

General checks for Windows and Mac

Before trying other steps, it is worth confirming a few things that can cause problems on both platforms.

  • Confirm the app was downloaded from the official Nearo website.

  • Make sure your internet connection was stable during the download.

  • Check that your device has enough available storage space.

  • Restarting your device before trying again resolves many installation issues.

Still having trouble?

If none of the steps above resolve the issue, contact Nearo support and include the following information to help the team assist you faster.

  • Your device type and model (for example, MacBook Pro or Windows laptop).

  • Your operating system version (for example, macOS Ventura or Windows 11).

  • A screenshot or the exact wording of any error message you are seeing.

  • Where you downloaded the app from.
