If Nearo cannot share your screen or display screen-sharing features correctly, your Mac may be blocking screen recording permissions. These steps are for the Nearo desktop app on a Mac, because guests who join in a web browser cannot share their screen.
Check your Mac model and macOS version
If you are not sure which macOS version you have, follow these steps before continuing.
Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
Click About This Mac.
You will see your Mac model (such as "MacBook Air" or "iMac") and your macOS name and version number (such as "macOS Sonoma 14.5" or "macOS Ventura 13.6.7").
macOS Ventura and Sonoma
These steps apply to newer Mac computers, including both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
Open System Settings.
Select Privacy & Security.
Click Screen & System Audio Recording or Screen Recording.
Toggle on permission for Nearo. If the permission for Nearo is already on, toggle it off and on again.
Completely quit Nearo by right-clicking the Nearo icon in the menu bar at the top of your screen and choosing Quit, then reopen Nearo before trying again.
ℹ️ On some Macs, Apple may show Screen Recording instead of Screen & System Audio Recording.
macOS Monterey, Big Sur, and Catalina
These versions are common on Intel Macs.
Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
Open System Preferences.
Select Security & Privacy.
Open the Privacy tab.
In the left sidebar, click Screen Recording.
Toggle on the permission for Nearo. If the permission for Nearo is already on, toggle it off and on again.
Completely quit Nearo by right-clicking the Nearo icon in the menu bar at the top of your screen and choosing Quit, then reopen Nearo before trying again.
If the settings are locked
Click the lock icon in the bottom-left corner.
Enter your Mac password.
Make the permission changes.
If Nearo does not appear in the list
Reopen Nearo.
Join or start a session, then click Share Screen in the controls bar again so macOS displays the permission prompt. The controls bar is the dark gray strip along the bottom of the call window, and Share Screen is on its left side, right after Camera. If you are the tutor, a student needs to be in your Room first.
If available, use the + button in the Screen Recording settings to manually add Nearo.
🔔 Nearo may also need permission for Microphone, Camera, and Accessibility, which is what remote control uses. These settings are in the same Privacy & Security section. See Using remote control during a Nearo session.
If Nearo still does not work
Completely quit Nearo.
Restart your Mac.
Try screen sharing again.
